About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Lawyer to join our supportive and motivated Institutional Legal team and partner with our growing Transaction Banking business. The role provides broad, high-impact legal support across Payments & Cash Management and Clearing (PCM) and Trade & Supply Chain (TSC), with opportunities to contribute to Wholesale Digital and Digital Solutions matters where relevant.

You will advise on established products and new initiatives across payments, cash management, clearing, liquidity, trade finance, supply chain finance and structured trade finance. You will work closely with Product, Risk, Compliance and other enablement partners to help the business grow in a well-managed way, solve complex customer and regulatory issues, and deliver practical outcomes in a changing and dynamic environment. You will work at the centre of a growing Transaction Banking business, supporting products that are integral to how institutional customers make and receive payments, manage liquidity, trade and finance supply chains. The role will have a primary geographic focus on geographies in ANZ’s International footprint especially in Asia (including Singapore and Hong Kong).

What will your day look like?

As a Senior Lawyer, you will:

• Strategic and proactive advice. Provide high-quality, commercially relevant and innovative legal advice across PCM and TSC to support customer outcomes, business objectives, product strategy and sustainable growth.
• Product and innovation. Advise on the development, approval and implementation of new or amended products, services, channels and financial infrastructure, including payments and payment innovation, digital solutions, receivables, client monies, liquidity, clearing, trade finance and supply chain finance.
• Complex transactions. Structure, negotiate, draft and advise on non-standard and complex customer transactions and documentation, including matters involving other financial institutions and cross-border or multi-jurisdictional arrangements.
• Documentation. Draft and amend product terms and conditions, transaction documents, confidentiality agreements, indemnities and other arrangements, and advise on tenders and negotiated departures from standard positions.
• Legal risk management. Proactively identify and manage legal risk through timely, proportionate and cost-effective advice, exercising sound judgement on risks, mitigants and escalation.
• Regulatory change and compliance. Assess the impact of legal and regulatory developments on Transaction Banking products and help the business implement change. Advise on complex regulatory issues, compliance with or potential breach of law, breach reporting and, where appropriate, interactions with regulators.
• Customer and business problem-solving. Help resolve complex legal, regulatory, operational and customer issues, balancing legal risk with commercial objectives and practical implementation.
• Due diligence and governance. Conduct contract and legal due diligence and advise on ANZ's rights, risks and responsibilities. Support the entry into and governance of complex principal transactions, partnerships, joint ventures, investments or strategic arrangements undertaken by the business.
• Stakeholder partnership. Work closely with Product, Risk, Compliance, Operations and other stakeholders to promote a consistent and effective risk management approach across Transaction Banking.
• Projects and strategic priorities. Participate in strategic, regulatory and transformation projects and help PCM and TSC deliver growth initiatives and business priorities.
• External counsel. Instruct and manage external counsel, or assist the business to do so, with a focus on high-quality and cost-efficient outcomes.
• Capability and knowledge sharing. Identify training needs, develop and deliver training, keep stakeholders informed of significant legal developments, and share knowledge and experience across the legal team.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

• Extensive post-qualification experience gained in a leading Australian or international law firm, an authorised deposit-taking institution, a listed financial institution, or a comparable in-house environment.
• Strong technical expertise in banking and/or financial services law, together with the ability to identify and manage legal risk and exercise excellent judgement.
• Experience in one or more areas relevant to Transaction Banking. This may include payments, cash management, clearing, liquidity, digital solutions, trade finance or supply chain finance. Breadth across all areas is not essential.
• Experience advising on complex, non-standard or cross-border transactions.
• Experience with multi-jurisdictional financing structures, including bilateral or syndicated lending, export credit agency financing, project finance or related debt finance structures, would be valuable.
• A strong understanding of how financial products are developed, documented, distributed and governed, and an interest in the customers and markets supported by the role.
• The ability to provide clear, concise and commercially practical advice in a dynamic environment, including where legal or regulatory issues are complex or evolving.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the confidence to influence and work effectively with senior leaders and stakeholders across Legal, Product, Risk, Compliance and Operations.
• The ability to work independently, prioritise changing demands and deliver accurate and timely advice under pressure.
• A collaborative, team-focused and flexible approach, with curiosity, sound common sense and a willingness to learn and contribute beyond your immediate area of expertise.
