We’re looking for a Senior Laboratory Technician to join our Laboratory team in Alexandra, Otago. You’ll deliver accurate, reliable testing across soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt, while supporting the day-to-day running of the lab and maintaining high quality and compliance standards. In doing so, you’ll help ensure the materials used in our projects meet the highest standards—contributing to safe, durable and high-performing infrastructure.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

Working closely with the Laboratory Manager, this is a senior, hands-on role in a busy materials testing environment. You’ll work both independently and as part of a team to keep testing running smoothly while balancing changing priorities. Your work directly supports the quality and performance of civil construction projects, ensuring materials meet required standards. This role plays a key part in maintaining safety, compliance, and confidence in the infrastructure we deliver.

Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities

  • Deliver accurate and timely laboratory testing across soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt

  • Maintain laboratory equipment to ensure it is calibrated and fit for purpose

  • Ensure all testing meets IANZ, ISO 17025, and internal quality requirements

  • Troubleshoot testing issues and escalate risks where needed

  • Support the efficient day-to-day operation of the laboratory

  • Guide and support trainee technicians in correct testing methods

Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We’re looking for someone with

  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a civil engineering materials testing laboratory

  • Holding or working towards IANZ Key Technical Person (KTP) status is advantageous

  • Proven technical competence testing soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt

  • Strong understanding of testing standards and laboratory procedures

  • Experience working with quality systems, including ISO 17025

  • High attention to detail with strong organisational skills

  • Ability to interpret, analyse and clearly report results

  • Confident communicator, both written and verbal
