Job Description

The Senior Field Technician is responsible for providing advanced on-site technical support and serving as a primary resource for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and improvement of Findlay Automotive Group’s network infrastructure across company locations.

This position has primary responsibility for day-to-day network operations, including switching, wireless, WAN connectivity, network configuration, performance troubleshooting, and coordination with telecommunications and network service providers. The role will work closely with IT leadership and third-party network partners on network architecture, upgrades, standardization, and major infrastructure initiatives.

The Senior Field Technician will also provide advanced field support and serve as an escalation resource for complex technical issues across dealership locations. The position requires strong communication and collaboration with internal teams, vendors, and project stakeholders, along with proactive problem-solving and adherence to company IT policies and standards. The role requires a strong sense of ownership, technical proficiency, and a customer-focused mindset, while maintaining the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to evolving technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Network Operations and Administration: Serve as a primary technical resource responsible for the ongoing operation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure across company locations.
  • Switching and Wireless: Configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and replace network switches, wireless access points, VLANs, SSIDs, and related infrastructure.
  • WAN and Internet Connectivity: Manage and troubleshoot dealership connectivity, including SD-WAN, DIA, broadband, LTE/5G failover, VPN connectivity, and carrier circuits.
  • Network Performance: Investigate latency, packet loss, routing, MTU, DHCP, DNS, wireless coverage, and other network performance issues.
  • Network Monitoring: Proactively monitor network availability and performance, identify recurring problems, and implement corrective actions.
  • Network Changes and Documentation: Maintain network diagrams, IP addressing, VLAN documentation, configurations, equipment inventories, and change records.
  • Network Security: Work with the Security team to maintain appropriate segmentation, firewall policies, secure configurations, and network access controls.
  • Infrastructure Deployment: Lead network equipment installation, replacement, upgrades, and dealership infrastructure projects.
  • Vendor and Carrier Escalation: Work directly with network vendors, ISPs, telecommunications providers, and contractors to troubleshoot and resolve service issues.
  • Advanced Field Support: Provide Tier 2/3 on-site support for infrastructure, hardware, and systems issues that require advanced troubleshooting.
  • Help Desk Escalation: Serve as an escalation resource for complex issues that cannot be resolved by the Help Desk or Field Technician team.
  • Technology Projects: Participate in construction, remodel, camera, telephony, and other technology projects when network or infrastructure expertise is required.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:
  • 4–6 years of experience in IT support, field technician roles, or technical infrastructure support.
  • Hands-On experience with:
  • Network administration, configuration, installation, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Configuring and troubleshooting managed switches, wireless access points, VLANs, and network segmentation.
  • Troubleshooting TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, routing, VPN, and WAN connectivity issues.
  • Supporting and troubleshooting internet circuits, SD-WAN, and redundant/failover connectivity.
  • Using network monitoring and diagnostic tools to identify performance, connectivity, and availability issues.
  • Maintaining network documentation, including network diagrams, IP addressing, VLAN configurations, and equipment inventories.
  • Hardware deployment and maintenance, including workstations, printers, and other endpoint devices.
  • Active Directory and Microsoft environments for user and account administration.
  • Supporting technology infrastructure across distributed or multi-location environments.
  • Working with ISPs, telecommunications providers, network vendors, and contractors to troubleshoot issues and implement infrastructure changes.

Desired Attributes:

  • Education: Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications, such as: CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or equivalent networking knowledge or experience.
  • Experience:
  • 4–6 years of experience in IT support, field technician roles, or technical infrastructure support.
  • Hands-on experience with:
  • Physical security or camera systems
  • Experience with switching and wireless technologies.
  • Experience with networking, SD-WAN, and firewall technologies.
  • Experience supporting enterprise wireless environments.
  • Experience with network monitoring and management platforms.
