Job Description

The Department of Biology at the University of Rochester (https://www.sas.rochester.edu/bio/) invites applications for a non-tenure track, instructional faculty position in Introductory Biology at the rank of Lecturer. Primary responsibilities are:

1) Teaching Principles of Biology I (BIOL 110) in the fall; enrollments are ca. 200 students. This is the first course in the course sequence for all biology majors. The course provides an introduction to biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and animal physiology.

2) Teaching the next course in the sequence, Principles of Biology II (BIOL 111), in the spring; enrollments are ca. 200. This course focuses on evolution, organismal diversity, functional biology, and ecology.

3) Overseeing the laboratory accompanying Principles of Biology II (BIOL 111P). Enrollments are ca. 300 students, in multiple sections taught by undergraduate teaching assistants, with the assistance of a teaching lab specialist.

4) After the first year, additional duties may be assigned in consultation with the candidate; this might include teaching an additional biology course in the fall (ca. 30-40 students), or undergraduate advising.

A PhD in an appropriate area and demonstrated excellence in teaching is required. This full-time, nine-month position includes benefits. Optional summer teaching for additional compensation is possible. The position begins August 2026. Pending satisfactory performance after the first year, candidates may be eligible for the newly established instructional faculty track with multi-year appointments and the possibility of promotion to higher ranks.

Please apply online and include an application letter, CV, a statement of teaching experience, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and three reference letters. Review of applications will begin March 23 and continue until the position is filled.
