Job Description

Senior Infrastructure Engineer — Backup & Recovery
Function: Edge Data Center (EDC)
Entity: A.P. Moller – Maersk, supporting APM Terminals
Location: Bengaluru, India
Reports to: Senior Engineering Manager, Edge Data Center

The opportunity

The Edge Data Center team protects the data that keeps APM Terminals running across a globally distributed estate of edge sites. When something fails, the ability to recover — fast, cleanly, and predictably — is what keeps terminal operations moving.

As Senior Infrastructure Engineer — Backup & Recovery, you own the backup and disaster-recovery capability across this estate, spanning both on-premise platforms and cloud workloads. You are the person the team trusts to guarantee that data is protected, that recovery works when it's needed, and that our RPO and RTO commitments are met in practice, not just on paper.

What you'll do

  • Design, Deploy, operate and continuously improve backup and recovery services across the global edge estate — on-premise and cloud — against agreed service levels.
  • Own the health of the backup environment day to day: policies, schedules, job success rates, capacity, retention and reporting.
  • Lead disaster-recovery design and execution — replication, failover, and regular, evidenced DR testing — ensuring RPO/RTO targets are met and validated.
  • Run recovery operations under pressure: restore quickly and correctly during incidents, and drive the root cause so failures don't repeat.
  • Standardise and automate backup operations to reduce manual effort and improve reliability and consistency across sites.
  • Manage the strategic backup vendor relationship and act as the senior technical escalation point for anything backup or recovery related.
  • Partner with platform, cloud and modernization teams to ensure new and migrated workloads are protected from day one.

Technical skills

Primary (must have):

  • Commvault — design, administration and operations at enterprise scale
  • Microsoft Azure Backup (and Azure Site Recovery / equivalent cloud-native protection)
  • Enterprise backup for on-premise and cloud workloads, including other leading products (e.g. Veeam, Rubrik, Cohesity, NetBackup)
  • Disaster recovery: replication, failover/failback, DR testing, and meeting RPO/RTO commitments
  • Automation and scripting (e.g. PowerShell, Python) to standardise and streamline backup operations

Secondary (advantageous):

  • Virtualization platforms (VMware, Nutanix) and their backup integration
  • Broader Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) fundamentals
  • Storage and data-protection architecture in distributed environments

Experience & qualifications

  • Relevant experience: 8–10 years focused on enterprise backup, recovery and disaster recovery across on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Total experience: 10–14 years in IT infrastructure / data center operations.
  • Proven, hands-on ownership of a backup and recovery estate at scale — not just administering jobs, but designing the capability and being accountable for recoverability.
  • Real experience running recoveries and DR tests under pressure, with evidence of meeting RPO/RTO targets.
  • Comfortable operating in a large, globally distributed organisation across timezones.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g. Commvault, Microsoft Azure) are valued; equivalent demonstrated experience is equally welcome.

Who you are

  • Dependable under pressure. When a recovery is needed, you stay calm, methodical and fast — people trust you to bring the data back.
  • Rigorous and evidence-driven. You don't assume backups work; you prove it, test it, and report it clearly.
  • A clear communicator. You keep the right people informed during incidents and translate technical status into plain, honest updates.
  • Ownership-minded. You take responsibility for recoverability end to end and drive improvement without being asked.
