  • Enhance your expertise through collaboration, instructing and reviewing opinions from leading tax counsel and other specialist advisers

  • We're offering this role until January 2027

What you'll do

As a Senior Indirect Tax Manager, you’ll liaise with other tax colleagues to ensure the consistency of VAT advice with direct tax, transfer pricing, and commercial considerations. You’ll provide additional specialist input and support, including the quarterly VAT compliance process, and settlements and elections with HMRC, as well as supporting VAT account management and reconciliation. You’ll also support services and functions, taking primary responsibility for the analysis and review of complex deals, products, and initiatives.

Furthermore, you’ll proactively work with business areas to ensure competitive cost and invoicing policies, including liaising with clients and external lawyers regarding the liability of our supplies and the legalities surrounding the recharging of costs. You’ll oversee the indirect tax implications arising from offshored services provided to the UK and manage litigated disputes. You’ll also be responsible for meeting HMRC expectations, especially in relation to Partial Exemption, ensuring compliance with the Code of Practice on Taxation for Banks, and becoming well regarded and respected while maintaining strong working relationships at both local and head office level.

In addition, you’ll be:

  • Obtaining rulings from, making claims on, and delivering information to HMRC and other fiscal authorities based on the collection of confirmed factual circumstances

  • Assisting in the review of error correction notices and mitigating the bank’s exposure to the penalty regime for careless errors

  • Assisting in the review of discrete sections of the bank’s VAT returns, including Annual Adjustment and Capital Goods Scheme calculations

  • Developing colleague abilities through monitoring and mentoring

  • Proactively raising awareness of the indirect tax team and ensuring effective relationships are maintained with all key internal contacts

  • Assisting with building and managing the relationship with HMRC and other external contacts through attendance at networking events, industry seminars, and forums for the long-term benefit of the bank

The skills you'll need

We’re looking for someone with excellent indirect tax technical knowledge, with expertise in financial services as a key strength. You must have significant experience in VAT advisory or indirect tax advisory within financial services such as banking, capital markets, insurance, or asset management, along with relevant and proven experience of dealing with indirect taxes in a professional or major organisation advisory role.

You’ll also need to hold a Chartered Tax Adviser qualification from the Chartered Institute of Taxation, or an equivalent professional accounting or tax qualification, with proven delivery experience in a complex organisational environment. Moreover, you’ll demonstrate up-to-date awareness of relevant tax, regulatory, accounting, and overseas indirect tax issues, alongside strong project management and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with senior management.

In addition, you'll need:

  • The ability to manage relationships with often difficult and demanding business colleagues

  • The ability to provide coaching and guidance to less experienced colleagues, and to take responsibility for aspects of their technical development

  • Good general business and commercial awareness

  • The ability to handle a high volume of workload within overall deadlines and service standards

  • Sound knowledge of Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
