Job Description

Skillsource is delighted to be partnering with a leading international consultancy to recruit an ambitious Hydrogeologist to join their growing groundwater division. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced professional seeking to advance their career within a high‑performing geo‑environmental team working across the UK and Ireland.

Our client operates a highly successful and well‑established groundwater business, delivering major frameworks and flagship projects for water utilities, public agencies, and private sector clients. Following multiple recent project wins—spanning groundwater resource evaluation, abstraction feasibility, and long‑term implementation programmes—they are expanding their team and seeking a motivated Hydrogeologist to support and manage key client accounts.

This role can be appointed at Consultant or Senior Hydrogeologist level, depending on experience. You will play a central role in the technical delivery, growth, and development of groundwater services, joining the business at an exciting time of continued expansion.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical skills, commercial awareness, and confidence working directly with clients. This position is ideally suited to an individual with a successful background in groundwater consultancy, particularly in groundwater resource development, looking to build their project management and leadership capabilities in a dynamic consultancy environment.

You will contribute to highly meaningful work, supporting the feasibility, investigation, development and acquisition of private and public water supplies. Candidates with experience across the UK and Irish regulatory environments are especially encouraged to apply. Experience managing projects of £100k+ value and a solid understanding of abstraction licensing regimes in the UK and Northern Ireland will be highly advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake Desk Studies to assess proposed groundwater abstraction locations, water demand, well site suitability, potential yield, hydraulic efficiency, and water quality.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise Field Reconnaissance activities.
  • Audit existing wells or specify and oversee the drilling of trial wells.
  • Specify and supervise pumping tests and prepare associated technical reports.
  • Specify and supervise groundwater sampling, testing and deliver high‑quality water quality reports.
  • Coordinate environmental impact assessments linked to groundwater abstraction and support abstraction licence applications.
  • Support decisions relating to trial well development or new production well siting.
  • Act as day‑to‑day client interface, building trusted relationships.
  • Conduct site visits and provide technical assessments in line with UK best practice.
  • Manage and deliver Hydrogeological Risk Assessments and Desk Studies.
  • Supervise site investigation works from costing to execution and reporting.
  • Log soils and rocks to BS5930 / Eurocode 7 standards.
  • Prepare health and safety documentation including RAMS.
  • Produce factual and interpretative reports including conceptual models and controlled waters risk assessments.
  • Provide oversight, review work from junior colleagues, and support senior staff.
  • Mentor junior team members in site assessment, data interpretation, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with clients, colleagues, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contribute to tenders and fee proposals.
  • Travel as required; maintain a valid drivers licence; work independently with excellent communication skills.

Essential Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Honours degree in earth sciences, geology, geochemistry; Masters or PhD in hydrogeology.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to present findings clearly in reports or presentations.
  • Proven experience preparing interpretative reports to support abstraction licence applications.
  • Experience designing and procuring groundwater abstraction investigations.
  • Strong capability interpreting pumping test data for confined/unconfined aquifers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience using pumping test analysis tools (e.g., Aquifer Win32, Aquitest).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working away from base office when required.
  • Full, clean driving licence.

Desirable

  • Chartered status (IGI or equivalent) with 7+ years of hydrogeological experience (non‑chartered applicants still considered).
  • Groundwater modelling experience (e.g., MODFLOW).
  • Understanding of water chemistry and water treatment standards.
  • Experience in borehole design, installation and pumping test analysis.
