Our Environment Division

Our Environment Business provides ‘source to sea’ asset delivery capability across the UK and Scotland, working on both Frameworks and standalone projects.

About the Role

As Senior HS&E Advisor, you will support the Framework HS&E Manager across all health, safety and environmental aspects, while providing leadership and direction to a team of HS&E Advisors.

You will play a key role in delivering a first-class HS&E service to our clients and operational teams, ensuring that our projects meet exemplary standards across health, safety and environmental performance.

You will support the implementation of the HS&E strategy and Business Management System, driving consistency, compliance and continual improvement across the Framework. You will also have the opportunity to act as a deputy to the Framework HS&E Manager, providing an excellent development opportunity for someone looking to progress towards a Framework HS&E Manager role.

What you'll be doing

As Senior HS&E Advisor, you will:

  • Foster and support an inclusive, open, transparent and collaborative environment that develops our HS&E culture, maturity and behaviours.
  • Support the implementation of our HS&E strategy, ensuring it is embedded within the activities and priorities of the HS&E Advisor team.
  • Lead and provide professional advice and direction to HS&E Advisors, ensuring they are actively engaged across their Framework and contribute to the successful delivery of projects.
  • Support the promotion of our behavioural programme, ‘Challenging Beliefs, Affecting Behaviours’, ensuring it aligns with our business leadership ambitions.
  • Ensure the Business Management System is effectively implemented, taking account of client requirements and driving performance through our processes and standards.
  • Support HS&E Advisors in providing technical and specialist guidance to line and site management.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, supply chain partners, regulatory authorities, industry bodies and colleagues.
  • Act as a deputy for the Framework HS&E Manager when required, representing the HS&E function and supporting the delivery of Framework objectives.
  • Provide HS&E input to operational teams throughout the project lifecycle, from planning through to completion.
  • Identify where standards are not being met and take appropriate action to address issues and manage risk.
  • Use HS&E performance KPIs to review performance, identify trends and drive continual improvement across projects and functions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve HS&E performance and mitigate risk to Galliford Try.
  • Report regularly to project management teams and attend meetings on behalf of the project team and Framework HS&E Manager as required.
  • Escalate HS&E concerns appropriately to the Framework HS&E Manager.
  • Proactively collaborate with operational and project teams on HS&E matters affecting our projects.

Key Deliverables

You will be responsible for ensuring that:

  • Sufficient HS&E support is available to operational teams for the review of Construction Phase Plans, Emergency Response Plans, high-risk method statements, risk assessments and other project documentation.
  • A robust programme of HS&E monitoring, audits and reviews is delivered across workplaces, with a focus on maintaining high-quality inspections and identifying emerging trends.
  • Site safety and environmental audits are undertaken, alongside ISO 45001 audits, with outputs appropriately recorded and actions managed to completion.
  • Supply chain partners are appropriately onboarded and subject to effective management review.
  • HS&E training and awareness programmes are supported through the preparation and delivery of training sessions, best-practice guidance, codes of practice and HS&E information.
  • HS&E Advisors are supported in, or lead where appropriate, incident investigations, identifying root causes and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Incident reports are monitored and managed within agreed timescales, with appropriate close-out and quality assurance.
  • Regulatory bodies are liaised with where required in relation to incident management.
  • Month-end HS&E reports are produced in a timely manner and presented to the relevant Board under the direction of the Framework HS&E Manager.
  • Personal development reviews and development plans are established and maintained for direct reports.

About You

We’re looking for an experienced HS&E professional who is ready to take the next step in their career and who can demonstrate strong leadership, technical credibility and the ability to influence at all levels.

You will have:

  • Relevant HS&E experience within a similar industry, ideally infrastructure, water or another regulated environment
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience within an HS&E function.
  • Proven experience in HS&E management, systems, risk management and relevant legal frameworks.
  • Experience of supporting HS&E delivery throughout the project lifecycle, from preparation and design through to construction.
  • Experience of developing and delivering learning and development programmes.
  • A strong understanding of culture change and organisational development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, third parties, operational teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship-building, influencing, negotiating and engagement skills, with a genuine ability to foster a one-team approach.
  • A structured and systematic approach to identifying and analysing problems, understanding risks and implementing effective solutions.
  • A curious, analytical and improvement-focused mindset, with a commitment to productivity, compliance and continual improvement.
  • The ability to thrive in complex and dynamic environments.
  • Good knowledge of data analytics and reporting systems.
  • Strong IT skills and confidence using the Microsoft Office suite.

Essential

  • Relevant HS&E experience in a similar industry, including supervisory experience.
  • NEBOSH Construction or General Certificate.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across projects and contracts within the region.

Desirable

  • Membership of IOSH or IIRSM
  • CMIOSH or working towards.
