Job Description

Are you an experienced HR professional looking for a role where you can truly influence business performance, support leaders, and make a lasting impact on the employee experience?

We're looking for a Senior HR Advisor to join our Portobello Operations team. This is a fantastic opportunity to become a trusted partner to operational leaders, helping them navigate people challenges, develop high-performing teams, and create a positive workplace culture.

As the lead HR contact for the site, you'll play a key role in delivering a proactive and commercial HR service across a diverse operational workforce. You'll provide expert guidance on employee relations, support recruitment and talent initiatives, partner with Trade Union representatives, and contribute to business-wide people strategies that drive engagement, capability, and performance.

What you'll be doing

In this varied and rewarding role, you will:

  • Act as the primary HR advisor for managers, supervisors, and employees across Portobello Operations.
  • Partner with operational leaders to provide pragmatic and commercially focused HR solutions.
  • Manage employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinary, grievance, absence management, and performance-related issues.
  • Develop management capability through coaching, guidance, and training on HR policies and best practice.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with Trade Union representatives, supporting constructive employee relations and consultation activities.
  • Support organisational change initiatives, restructures, and workforce planning projects.
  • Lead and coordinate recruitment activity across the site, ensuring a positive candidate and hiring manager experience.
  • Champion Early Talent, succession planning, and development initiatives to build future capability within the operation.
  • Work closely with managers to identify and address skills gaps and development needs.
  • Drive employee engagement initiatives and support activities that strengthen communication, wellbeing, and inclusion.
  • Analyse key HR metrics and trends, providing insights and recommendations to support business decision-making.
  • Partner with Health & Safety and Occupational Health providers to support employee wellbeing and facilitate successful return-to-work outcomes.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of HR processes, policies, and ways of working.

What you'll bring

  • CIPD Level 5 qualification.
  • A minimum of three years' experience operating at HR Advisor level or above.
  • Strong employee relations experience and confidence managing complex people matters.
  • Previous experience working within a unionised environment and building effective Trade Union relationships.
  • Experience supporting organisational change and business transformation activities.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills.
  • A proactive, resilient, and solutions-focused approach.
  • The ability to balance operational priorities while maintaining a strong focus on people and performance.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to join a business where HR is recognised as a key partner to operational success. You'll have the autonomy to make decisions, influence leaders, and drive meaningful change while working within a supportive HR team. If you enjoy building relationships, solving challenges, and creating positive outcomes for both people and the business, we'd love to hear from you.
