Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION

Senior Highway Roadway Project Manager - Hybrid - Watertown, MA

VHB’s Highway/Roadway Group is deeply engaged in transformative development and infrastructure projects across New England, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and genuine work-life balance. Our team has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards and is a key contributor to some of the region’s most complex and high-profile design-build projects—work you can be proud to put your name on.

Through these initiatives and recognitions, VHB has demonstrated its commitment not only to advancing transportation infrastructure and improving community safety and sustainability, but also to creating a healthy, supportive environment for the people who make that work possible. You won’t be expected to sacrifice your personal well-being to do meaningful, impactful work here.

As a Senior Highway Roadway Project Manager, you'll lead multidisciplinary transportation engineering projects—including complex roadways, bikeways, and utility design—while knowing that you have the full backing of an engaged and accessible leadership team. You'll oversee traffic engineering, stormwater management, drainage, temporary traffic control, traffic signals, construction observation, cost estimating, and construction administration on large, challenging projects that benefit from your experience and judgment rather than overburdening you with unsustainable expectations.

At VHB, our leadership understands what it feels like to be stretched too thin, under-resourced, or unable to fully own the quality of the work you deliver. That’s why we focus on staffing projects thoughtfully, promoting open communication, and providing the tools, technical support, and decision-making authority you need to be successful. You’ll be part of a culture that respects boundaries, values your time, and encourages you to continue growing both personally and professionally.

Our clients include local municipalities, MassDOT, DCR and other state transportation agencies, as well as private partners who support the development of the places where we live, work, recreate, and learn. Working with these partners on large-scale, complex design-build efforts, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Shape impactful, long-lasting infrastructure projects
  • Collaborate with a high-performing, supportive multidisciplinary team
  • Experience a more balanced workload, with leadership that listens
  • Reclaim a sense of pride, ownership, and satisfaction in your day-to-day work

If you’re feeling frustrated in your current role—whether it’s due to lack of internal support, limited growth or career path or you feel you deserve more—VHB offers a chance to reset: to do challenging, high-caliber work in a place where your expertise is respected, your voice matters, and your life outside of work is valued.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing large multi-disciplinary highway reconstruction projects, both traditional bid-build and alternate delivery (Design-Build, PPP, etc.)
  • Working with Contractors for the delivery of Design-Build projects.
  • Training / mentoring junior staff in various aspects of highway design.
  • Assisting with the production and delivering transportation projects through the construction administration phase
  • Pre-design project planning and financial management
  • Design of highways and roads including the development of geometric layout, grading, and drainage, working with utilities, and environmental permitting
  • Development of technical design and specification documents

Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering required. Masters degree preferred
  • 11-15+ years’ experience
  • PE licensed.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Watertown, MA is $150,000-200,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
