We are seeking a highly seasoned Senior Healthcare CFO to serve as a transitional advisory executive for client engagements nationwide. This role is designed for a proven healthcare finance leader with extensive experience operating at the system, hospital, and enterprise levels, including direct interaction with Boards of Directors, CEOs, lenders, rating agencies, and regulators. The Senior Healthcare CFO will lead finance and revenue-related functions during periods of transition, growth, turnaround, or transaction readiness, while mentoring internal teams and leaving organizations stronger and more capable upon exit.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise across hospital operations, revenue cycle, payer strategy, and capital management, with demonstrated success leading large, complex healthcare organizations through change.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise & System Financial Leadership
- Serve as Transitional Advisory CFO/Senior Finance Executive for hospitals and multi-hospital health systems, reporting directly to the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Lead all core finance functions, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury, capital planning, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
- Provide executive-level financial leadership during periods of financial distress, transaction activity, mergers, divestitures, or organizational restructuring.
- Maintain balance sheet strength and liquidity through disciplined cash, investment, and debt management.
Board, Lender & External Stakeholder Management
- Serve as primary financial liaison to Boards of Directors, Audit and Finance Committees, lenders, bondholders, rating agencies, and external auditors.
- Prepare and present clear, credible financial materials for Board review, strategic planning, and decision-making.
- Manage complex audit processes and regulatory reporting requirements, including interactions with federal and state agencies.
Revenue Cycle, Payer Strategy & Performance Improvement
- Oversee end-to-end revenue cycle operations, including patient access, coding, billing, collections, denial management, and vendor relationships.
- Develop and execute system-wide payer contracting and negotiation strategies, building executive-level payer relationships.
- Lead revenue enhancement and cost reduction initiatives that improve operating performance, margins, and cash flow.
- Apply data-driven analytics, pro formas, and forecasting models to support operational, clinical, and strategic initiatives.
Crisis, Turnaround & Transaction Support
- Guide organizations through complex transactions, restructuring efforts, and performance turnarounds while maintaining operational stability.
- Lead financial planning and scenario modeling for transactions, affiliations, and strategic alternatives.
- Support executive leadership during crisis events, including extraordinary operational or regulatory challenges.
Team Leadership, Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer
- Lead, coach, and mentor senior finance leaders, including Associate CFOs, Vice Presidents, Controllers, and Revenue Cycle executives.
- Stabilize and develop internal finance teams, ensuring continuity and capability after interim assignments conclude.
- Establish or enhance financial reporting, budgeting, and governance structures to support long-term organizational success.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA required; MBA, FHFMA, or equivalent advanced credentials strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 20+ years of progressive healthcare financial leadership experience.
- Extensive experience serving as CFO or senior finance executive for large hospitals, multi-hospital systems, and integrated delivery networks.
- Demonstrated success managing organizations with revenues ranging from $500M to $10B+.
- Proven track record in interim leadership, financial turnarounds, transaction support, and complex system integrations.
- Deep experience in revenue cycle leadership, payer contracting, and system-wide financial operations.
Skills & Expertise
- Expertise in healthcare finance, accounting, treasury, capital markets, and risk management.
- Strong operational finance background spanning acute care hospitals, specialty services, physician practices, and shared services.
- Advanced financial modeling, forecasting, and performance improvement capabilities.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage credibly with Boards, executives, clinicians, and external stakeholders.
Systems Proficiency
- Experience with enterprise financial systems (e.g., Oracle) and EMR platforms (e.g., Epic).
