We have an opening for a Senior Health and Safety Associate in the Environment Safety & Health (ESH) Directorate to support one or more of the Integrated Safety Teams (IST). You will apply specialized and advanced ESH technical expertise and oversight for a wide variety of complex ESH tasks in support of R&D operations. You will be expected to possess the skills knowledge and abilities necessary to interact with Safety Disciplines, Facility Management, and Workers as well as provide general direction to Health and Safety Technicians as delegated by Technician Supervisor.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will

  • Provide specialized and highly advanced technical support to ES& technicians, scientists, engineers, and managers supporting safe experimental work in facilities.
  • Analyze and interpret highly complex ESH related data, share results, identify problems, and plan projects to address ES&H issues or requirements.
  • Qualify staff to operate radiological, industrial hygiene detection and analytical instrumentation and field monitoring equipment in support of contamination control applications.
  • Serve as primary contact and coordinator of technical work for Integrated Safety Team (IST) Disciplines in support of Discipline Action Plan (DAP) requirements and Program requests.
  • Direct and facilitate Health and Safety (H&S) Technicians in implementation of routines, surveys, sampling plans, and documentation as well as interpretation of applicable Work Control Documents.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and develop staff to review instructions and procedures to enhance efficient execution of work responsibilities.
  • Perform highly advanced ESH surveillance operations; qualify staff to analyze and interpret ESH instrument readings, analytical, and sampling results in support of IST Disciplines.
  • Provide ESH direction in support of programmatic, institutional, and emergency support operations.
  • Lead and direct technician staff in complex ESH related operations such as HEPA replacement, ventilation and piping assessment, workplace evaluations, area contamination assessment and recovery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Scientific or ESH related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in applied safety with emphasis in practical application of radiological, industrial hygiene, industrial safety, and/or environmental surveillance support.
  • Advanced experience operating radiological, industrial hygiene detection, and analytical instrumentation with practical knowledge of contamination control techniques.
  • Significant experience handling multiple projects, with demonstrated ability to collaborate with all levels of staff to achieve goals.
  • Significant experience demonstrating judgement to make independent decisions to support technical ES&H issues.
  • Highly advanced communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills to provide feedback, clear direction, and interpretation of safety requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience as a qualified Radiological Controls Technician.
  • Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and personal protective equipment, and work with toxic and radioactive materials.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience as a qualified DOE Radiological Controls Technician.
  • AHERA Asbestos Inspector qualification and/or AHERA Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor Worker qualification.
  • DOE Fissile Material and/or Tritium Handler.
  • Experienced in one or more NIF, ENG, SD, PLS, S300 facilities.

Pay Range

$151,620- $185,640 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
