Step into a vital position at our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Smugglers Way, Wandsworth. This is a fast‑paced, hands‑on operational role at the heart of London’s recycling system. Every day, you’ll be helping turn thousands of tonnes of commingled recyclables into high‑quality materials ready for reprocessing — ensuring that the city’s waste is handled safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
As a Senior Grab Crane Operative, you’ll take ownership of managing and maintaining bunker levels, coordinating material arriving by dustcart for processing in the MRF. You’ll be the go‑to person for overseeing junior and agency operatives, giving direction, offering guidance, and ensuring everyone works to the highest safety and operational standards.
You’ll also play a key role in liaising with TAC Control, Shift Supervisors and sampling teams to keep material quality high and operations flowing smoothly. Effective communication and calm decision‑making will be essential, especially in a busy environment where no two days look the same.
This role also brings opportunities to contribute to wider operational planning — from resource allocation and maintenance coordination to supporting the smooth running of the site. You’ll be central to maintaining a safe, organised and high‑performing facility that helps keep London’s recycling moving.
Please note: This role is Monday to Friday, 14:00 to 22:00.
We’re looking for someone with experience in a similar environment — preferably within recycling, MRF operations or an engineering‑based setting. You should be comfortable making decisions in a high‑pressure operational setting, with a strong understanding of safe working practices and statutory requirements.
Being a team player is essential. You’ll be guiding junior operatives, supporting colleagues across the facility, and ensuring that daily check sheets, paperwork and handovers are completed clearly and on time. Strong communication skills will help you keep everything running smoothly.
You’ll need the willingness to work flexibly, including additional hours or alternative shifts as required. A practical mindset, hands‑on attitude and readiness to assist with wider site tasks — including cleaning and maintenance duties — will make you a great fit.
If you’re driven, reliable and motivated by making a difference in essential environmental operations, you’ll thrive in this role and become a valued part of an experienced and dedicated team.
