Job Description

What's the role?

Are you ready to break agenda-setting stories in one of Australia’s most distinctive and fast-moving regions? The Cairns Post is seeking a driven senior general and business reporter to deliver accurate, compelling, and original content across Far North Queensland, covering the people, industries, and issues shaping the area. In this role, you will move confidently between breaking news, community-impact stories, and sharp business reporting - spanning key sectors from tourism, aviation, and property to local government, infrastructure, small business, agribusiness, and regional development—identifying the stories that matter most and telling them with authority, speed, and clarity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce accurate, timely, and publish-ready general news and business reporting across Far North Queensland on tight deadlines.
  • Break exclusive, original stories by maintaining source networks across tourism, property, infrastructure, council, crime, courts, small business, agriculture, and local communities.
  • Deliver sharp regional economic coverage on company activity, investments, jobs, cost-of-living pressures, resources, and policy decisions.
  • Cover fast-moving breaking news promptly without sacrificing accuracy or journalistic authority.
  • Format and publish digital content effectively, managing headlines, tags, metadata, and picture selection within newsroom workflows.
  • Collaborate with editors, photographers, and the wider newsroom to deliver impactful cross-platform print and digital journalism.
  • Represent The Cairns Post professionally while demonstrating sound news judgment in a competitive media environment.
  • Drive reader online engagement and support subscription growth across digital platforms.

Who are you?

  • You're an experienced journalist with a proven track record in general and/or business reporting, a sharp news sense, and a strong interest in the industries, challenges, and opportunities shaping regional Australia and Far North Queensland.
  • You can confidently generate your own stories, chase hard, and build trust to develop and maintain a wide contact network.
  • You're comfortable reporting across a diverse scope, from breaking news and community issues to business, development, and economic trends.
  • You can work under pressure, manage competing deadlines, and quickly turn around clean, accurate, publish-ready copy while maintaining high editorial standards.
  • You write clearly, confidently, and authoritatively across news, features, and analysis, with the ability to analyse complex issues and explain them in a way that is accessible and engaging for readers.
  • You understand digital publishing and feel confident working across platforms in line with newsroom workflows.
  • You're flexible, willing to embrace change, and able to demonstrate agility in a fast-paced sector.
  • You're highly self-motivated and maintain exceptional personal organisation and time management skills.
