The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest regulators. Within Regulatory Services, we minimise harm and maximise benefit through effective oversight of the gambling system under the Gambling Act 2003 We work collaboratively, use intelligence and innovation, and target regulatory effort where it makes the greatest difference.

The role

As a Senior Gambling Regulator, based in Auckland, you will play a critical role in delivering responsive, risk‑based regulation across the gambling sector. You will:

  • Lead and undertake complex audits, investigations and compliance activity
  • Conduct venue and casino inspections
  • Assess and process complex licensing and regulatory decisions
  • Engage confidently with operators and stakeholders to lift compliance and promote best practice
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and technical leadership across a national team of regulators

No two days are the same. This role requires sound judgement, resilience, and the ability to operate effectively in a complex regulatory environment.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking a modern senior regulator who:

  • Can navigate complexity and ambiguity in a regulatory context
  • Produces high-quality, clear, and well-reasoned regulatory decisions and written outputs that are robust, defensible, and capable of withstanding internal and external scrutiny
  • Builds effective relationships and can engage, influence and challenge where required
  • Provides technical leadership and develops others to strengthen regulatory practice
  • Brings persistence, resilience and strong professional judgement
  • Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a high‑performing, values‑driven team

The appointing range for this role $100,357 - $123,775, with the potential to appoint higher depending on level of experience.
