The University of Toronto is consistently ranked among the world’s leading research institutions, recognized for its commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and global impact. Within the Information Technology Services (ITS) Division, the Student Information Systems (SIS) group plays a critical role in supporting the academic and administrative needs of students, faculty, and staff. The SIS team is known for its dynamic, collaborative, and forward-thinking culture. It fosters an environment that values creativity, continuous learning, and the delivery of impactful technology solutions. Team members benefit from a supportive and inclusive workplace that promotes professional growth and offers the opportunity to contribute to transformative projects that shape the future of student services at one of Canada’s most prestigious universities.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, SIS Products and Applications, you will serve as the technical architect and senior developer for a dynamic, collaborative team focused on delivering transformational technology solutions to the University. Your work will directly shape the University's administrative management and student systems.

As a Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect, you will lead the design, development, and modernization of the Course Information System (CIS) and other enterprise applications within the EASI suite. You will provide technical leadership and architectural direction for a team of developers building front-end applications, APIs, and microservices, while working closely with business, security, operations, and architecture stakeholders. This role is critical to ensuring our applications are scalable, secure, cloud-native, and aligned with the University's long-term technology vision. You will also play a key role in mentoring developers, reducing key-person risk, and establishing architectural standards across the EASI application portfolio.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Architecting, designing, and overseeing the development of full stack applications using Java (Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate) and Angular, ensuring scalability, security, and long-term maintainability
  • Leading the modernization and migration of legacy applications (including AngularJS to Angular) with minimal business disruption
  • Designing and implementing cloud-native, containerized solutions using Azure and Kubernetes, including CI/CD pipeline architecture
  • Writing complex, clean, modular, and well-documented technical code, while establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across the team
  • Reconciling business requirements with information architecture needs for highly complex, cross-system integrations
  • Analyzing, recommending, and designing technical solutions for highly complex IT problems, including cross-cutting infrastructure dependencies
  • Collaborating with UX designers, business analysts, and architects to translate functional requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions
  • Providing architectural guidance and maintaining technical documentation for system architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and release notes
  • Mentoring developers and providing technical leadership on highly complex projects to strengthen overall team capability
  • Keeping the team well-informed on current technologies, best practices, and industry standards, particularly around cloud, containerization, and modern frontend frameworks
  • Creating complex technical documentation and user support guides

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent education and experience)
  • Minimum eight (8) years of relevant experience in full stack application development, including senior or architectural responsibilities
  • Significant, demonstrated experience in Java and Angular application architecture is required
  • Minimum seven (8) years of experience with Java applications, including REST API development, microservices architecture, and OAuth 2
  • Minimum six (6) years of experience building and architecting front-end applications using Angular (version 13+), with strong working knowledge of modern Angular features (standalone components, signals, RxJS, reactive forms, lazy loading, and dependency injection)
  • Minimum three (3) years of hands-on experience with AngularJS (1.x), including maintaining, extending, or migrating legacy AngularJS applications
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience leading at least one full AngularJS-to-Angular migration for a production enterprise application, including planning, execution, and post-migration support
  • Deep understanding of the architectural differences between AngularJS and Angular, and ability to advise on migration strategy, risk mitigation, and phased rollout approaches for legacy systems
  • Demonstrated experience designing and deploying cloud-native applications on Azure, including containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with Azure services such as Azure Function Apps, Azure Event Hubs, Azure Service Bus, Azure Queues, and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
  • Experience working in and leading development teams using git, code reviews, and pull requests
  • Experience building applications that are secure, performant, maintainable, and WCAG compliant
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams on highly complex, multi-application projects
  • Proficiency in Java web applications and APIs: Java Web Services, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, JUnit, JPA/Hibernate, Maven, and Gradle
  • Proficiency in front-end development: JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular, HTML5, and CSS
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and infrastructure-as-code principles
