Job Description
Company Overview
Joby Advanced Development designs, develops, and flight-tests novel aircraft using a software-first autonomy approach. We build and deploy autonomy, perception, planning, and radar systems across conventional, electric, and hydrogen-electric aircraft in both CTOL and VTOL configurations.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a Senior Field Service Engineer to provide advanced engineering support and liaison for J208 aircraft (a Cessna Caravan integrated with Superpilot autonomy technology) deployed on Operational Evaluations. Reporting to the Operational Evaluation Deployment Lead, this position serves as the primary technical subject matter expert responsible for troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, and avionics interactions with flight control and Ground Control Station (GCS) software in field environments. In this role, you will represent the product and program to current and prospective customers, while partnering directly with developmental engineering to flow lessons learned and technical updates back into future product iterations. This role will support prototype aircraft. Manuals will not be complete, and you will play a large role in developing them.
Responsibilities
- Own and manage engineering support workstreams for deployed J208 aircraft and Ground Control Stations, serving as the primary technical subject matter expert on-site
- Diagnose and resolve complex, multidisciplinary technical issues involving mechanical, electrical, avionics, and flight software interactions in creative and effective ways, in many instances for the first time with the product
- Brief internal and external stakeholders on complex technical systems, analytical results, and engineering judgment concerning system health and mission readiness
- Represent the J208 product and flight evaluation program to prospective and current military and civil customers during deployed field operations
- Partner closely with developmental engineering teams to capture field anomalies, software bugs, and hardware improvements, establishing systematic feedback loops for continuous product updates
- Develop procedures, operational workarounds, and technical guidelines for deployed flight test and maintenance personnel
- Frequently advise cross-functional teams on complex field maintenance matters, considering downstream implications on overall flight safety and program timelines
- Manage on-site engineering diagnostics and tooling during operational evaluations while traveling roughly 50% CONUS and OCONUS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical discipline with 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, Master’s degree with 6+ years, or equivalent practical experience
- Extensive, demonstrated experience in field service engineering, flight test support, or complex systems integration in deployed environments
- Proven capability as a super-user in troubleshooting hardware-to-software interactions, digital data buses, and electrical or avionics systems
- Active US Security Clearance, or ability to obtain and maintain a US Security Clearance post-hire
- Willingness and ability to travel roughly 50% domestically (CONUS) and internationally (OCONUS)
This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.
Desired
- Prior experience supporting autonomous flight control systems, uncrewed ground control stations, or fly-by-wire architectures
- Demonstrated experience conducting field service engineering or flight test support specifically on US military installations
- Familiarity with telemetry analysis tools and scripting languages (e.g., Python) for flight software log diagnostics
- Strong technical communication skills with a track record of partnering with cross-functional development teams and external customer stakeholders
