Team: Backend (7 developers), working closely with Frontend and Product
Reports to: CPO

The Role

As Engineering Manager – Backend, you will own the performance, organization, and evolution of the backend engineering team.

You will work closely with the CPO, Product Manager, Product Owners, and Tech Leads to align engineering capacity with product priorities, while ensuring the platform remains reliable, scalable, and maintainable.

The backend team already has strong technical expertise. Your role is to bring structure, ownership, and long-term vision to the engineering organization.

You will define and drive a forward-looking technical roadmap (6–12 months), anticipate platform risks, and lead structural improvements to support the company’s growth.

This role combines team leadership, engineering strategy, and strong technical credibility.

What You Will Do

Team Leadership

  • Manage and mentor backend engineers through regular 1-to-1 meetings

  • Own performance reviews and career development plans

  • Build a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality, and accountability

  • Lead hiring decisions and scale the backend team

Engineering Organization

  • Own the allocation of backend engineers across squads and initiatives

  • Define and maintain a clear balance between product delivery and technical investment

  • Drive coordination across squads and ensure alignment at the backend level

  • Establish scalable ways of working and improve overall team efficiency

Platform Reliability & Operations

  • Own platform reliability, performance and scalability outcomes

  • Define and implement incident management and operational processes

  • Establish operational ownership through rotations (on-call, release management, support roles)

  • Drive improvements in monitoring, observability and system resilience

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and drive the backend technical roadmap in collaboration with Tech Leads

  • Lead key architectural decisions and ensure long-term platform coherence

  • Identify risks early (scalability, performance, technical debt) and proactively address them

  • Set and enforce engineering standards across the backend team

  • Contribute to critical technical topics when needed (CI/CD, infrastructure, monitoring, platform tooling)

The role remains hands-on when necessary, with around 20–30% of time dedicated to technical topics.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong backend engineering background building production systems

  • Solid experience with Ruby on Rails in production environments

  • Proven experience managing or leading backend engineering teams

  • Experience working on high-traffic or transactional platforms

  • Ability to drive both execution and long-term technical strategy

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Experience collaborating closely with product teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience working on e-commerce or fintech platforms

  • Experience with logistics, order management, or payment systems

  • Experience managing distributed or remote engineering teams
