Job Description

WSP South Africa is seeking an experienced and passionate Engineer – Renewable Energy (Wind) to serve as a technical consultant for Wind Energy, Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Africa, while also supporting international renewable energy assignments as required.

The successful candidate will lead and support renewable energy advisory, technical due diligence, owner’s engineering, lender’s technical advisory, asset performance management, and techno-commercial evaluation activities, with a primary focus on utility scale Wind Energy projects, while also supporting Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Africa and selected international markets. The role involves providing independent technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle, including development, design review, construction, commissioning, operations, and asset optimization.

Technical (Approximately 100%):

  • Managing high-quality technical advisory works.

  • Project management and interfacing between engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil and control & instrumentation);

  • Provide technical input from initial assessment through to technical and economic feasibility of the solar PV /Wind projects and integration with other electrical or generating plants as necessary.

  • Review overall project design and suggest technical and design improvements.

  • Preparation and management of technical specifications, bills of materials, tender stage management and evaluations, negotiation and selection of Balance of Plant, Operation & Maintenance or EPC, and other supply contracts.

  • Technical reviews/negotiate key construction contracts for, and alongside, clients.

  • Due diligence of solar PV projects and support Sponsor(s) and Lender(s) throughout the Financial Close process including technical liaison with legal and financial advisors.

  • Assessing technical risks and proposing mitigation strategies to reduce risk exposure in project CAPEX, OPEX, and revenues.

  • Review project construction and acceptance including site visits and commissioning supervision; and

  • Assist with and/or conduct any other necessary aspects of a project that fall within the discipline of the role.

  • Lead and deliver technical due diligence, owner’s engineering, and renewable energy advisory assignments for utility-scale wind energy projects across all project phases, from development through operations.

  • Review and assess wind resource measurement campaigns, wind data analysis, energy yield assessments, uncertainty analyses, and long-term production estimates.

  • Evaluate wind turbine technology selection, turbine layouts, micrositing studies, wake loss assessments, and overall plant performance optimization.

  • Review and assess civil, electrical, and balance of plant (BoP) designs, including foundations, roads, crane pads, collector systems, substations, and grid connection infrastructure.

  • Conduct technical, operational, contractual, and commercial risk assessments and provide independent recommendations to developers, lenders, investors, and asset owners.

  • Review EPC, turbine supply, O&M, and long-term service agreements, including performance guarantees, availability guarantees, liquidated damages, and contractual obligations.

  • Assess project design documentation, construction quality, commissioning processes, and operational readiness to ensure compliance with industry standards and project requirements.

  • Support project acquisitions, financing transactions, lender due diligence, and investment decision-making through technical reviews and risk-based assessments.

  • Analyze operational performance data, identify performance gaps, and develop strategies to improve asset availability, reliability, and energy production.

  • Lead root cause analyses, corrective action reviews, and asset optimization initiatives to enhance long-term project performance.

  • Prepare technical reports, due diligence assessments, feasibility reviews, and advisory deliverables for clients and stakeholders.

  • Coordinate with project developers, OEMs, EPC contractors, consultants, lenders, investors, and regulatory authorities throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Support multidisciplinary renewable energy assignments involving Wind, Solar PV, and BESS technologies, leveraging cross-sector technical expertise.

  • Contribute to business development activities, proposal preparation, client engagement, and the growth of WSP's renewable energy advisory services.

  • Undertake site visits and international travel, particularly across Africa, to support project evaluations, technical inspections, construction monitoring, and client engagements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • B.Eng or BTech Engineering (EEE, Mech or ECE)

  • 3-6 years experience in Wind Technology experience, and Solar PV technology/BESS with experience considered very advantageous. A Mix of South African experience (REIPPP) and regional overseas experience is also preferred.

  • In-depth knowledge and field expertise regarding Wind turbine technologies including emerging technologies in the international renewable energy market.

  • Technical advisory experience towards investors, project developers, and banks.

  • Proven experience in business development.

  • Knowledge of various wind applications (utility-scale)

  • International wind project development and delivery experience.

  • Knowledge of wind plant designs, Wind resource assessment, Energy Yield Assessment, layouts, and connection interfaces.

  • International solar PV/BESS project development and delivery experience.

  • Knowledge of various solar PV and BESS applications

  • Experience covering a range of solar PV plant lifecycle delivery (including feasibility and development engineering, construction monitoring, witnessing testing and commissioning activities, and operational monitoring/inspections)

  • Knowledge of solar PV plant designs, Energy Yield Assessment, layouts, and connection interfaces.

  • ECSA registration or country equivalent.

KEY COMPETENCIES AND GENERIC SKILLS:

  • Minimum 3-6 years of postgraduate experience, preferably in the wind and solar industry.
  • Ability to work within a team of engineers.
  • Good communication skills
  • Good technical report writing skills
  • Ability to manage time, quality and effort in order to deliver a quality product within time and cost constraints.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage projects
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Must be able to function independently
