The City and County of Denver offers competitive pay commensurate with education and experience. New hires are typically brought into the organization between $109,134 - $150,000/annually, based on experience and education. The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position, you can expect to work on-site at least three days per week at the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building, 201 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80202. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

The DOTI Transportation Business Unit Transportation & Mobility Engineering (TME) team is seeking a dynamic Senior Engineer with interest and excitement in transportation/traffic engineering to lead and support the wide range of mobility and safety work. In this role, you will make a direct impact in bettering our city by designing and reviewing safe and equitable transportation mobility improvements that benefit all residents and the traveling public.
The TME team focuses on providing traffic engineering expertise for DOTI projects and programs and private development projects. We work with other City departments, design consultants, community stakeholders, and external agencies to complete our work.
Examples of work completed through this Division include:
Conducting plan reviews for all traffic signal, signing, and pavement marking improvements
Reviewing construction phasing and traffic control plans for private and City projects as part of permitting
Supporting the Vision Zero program through road safety audit review, crash analysis, and speed limit evaluation
Completing corridor signal progression and intersection signal timing projects
Providing transportation and traffic engineering subject matter expertise and contributing to policy development
Responding to citizen requests related to the transportation system
Developing designs for signing and pavement marking changes
Determining warrants for all-way stops, traffic signals, Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs), and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs)
Reviewing and scoping mobility studies and traffic modeling for private developments
Providing subject matter expert review and support on large, complex transportation projects (e.g., 16th Street, Colfax BRT)
The Senior Engineer on the TME team provides project leadership, cross‑organizational coordination, and technical guidance. This position serves as a mentor and may also supervise a direct report, reporting to the team’s Supervisor. The Senior Engineer leads and supports engineering design for innovative Vision Zero, bicycle, transit, pedestrian, and signal/ITS projects. The role collaborates closely with staff across DOTI’s Transportation Business Unit Planning and Implementation teams to deliver projects that advance safety and equity for all users.

The Senior Engineer (Traffic) will be responsible for tasks such as:
Reviewing temporary traffic control and phasing plans, representing the interests of the City Traffic Engineer
Managing the review of DOTI and developer planning and design submissions, ensuring alignment with schedules and regulatory requirements
Coordinating with the broader community using effective communication and relationship‑building skills
Partnering with TME leadership to build technical capacity in traffic engineering and serving as a technical leader within the discipline
Fostering collaborative, innovative partnerships with city, regional, state, and federal agencies; community groups; industry organizations; and nonprofit and private sector partners to support continuous transportation innovation
Occasional after‑hours work may be required for community meetings, special event support, and field observations based on project needs.
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
At least three years of progressive experience in transportation and/or traffic engineering
Experience reviewing temporary traffic control and construction phasing plans
Experience designing and/or reviewing construction documents for transportation infrastructure projects including roadways, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, intersection geometrics, pavement markings, traffic signs, and traffic signals
Experience scoping, conducting, calibrating, and reviewing traffic modeling and traffic impact studies, using Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, or TransModeler
Understanding of Vision Zero principles, the Highway Safety Manual, DiExSys (a road safety software) and experience with Road Safety Audits
Strong analytical skills to interpret and draw conclusions from a variety of data sources including but not limited to crash reports, traffic volumes, traffic speeds and other geo-spatial data sets
A comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and City agency policies, standards, and systems — especially the MUTCD
A passion for improving and working with our community and mentoring others
Experience and a comfort level with matrix management.
Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional engineering work experience after obtaining a Professional Engineering (PE) license. (Some positions may require experience in a specific engineering area)
Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
License/Certifications:
Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application.
Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.
Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
