Job Description

[What the role is]

What the role is

You will be part of the team that develops the specialised engineering capabilities required to establish EMA as an informed technical lead on advanced nuclear power systems. You will be responsible for building internal capabilities to evaluate the engineering feasibility and safety profiles of complex energy technologies, ensuring that the organization can benchmark global designs against international safety, security, and safeguards standards.

[What you will be working on]

What you will be working on:

1. Engineering Benchmarking & Technical Modelling

  • Technical Specialisation: Build specialised institutional expertise in advanced thermal-hydraulic systems, core physics, and material behaviour for next-generation nuclear energy technologies.

  • Multi-disciplinary Assessment: Conduct engineering research across Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical disciplines to verify the technical claims of emerging global technologies.

  • Conceptual Modelling: Support the development of technical benchmarks and reference architectures for various advanced reactor concepts (e.g., Light Water SMRs and High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors).

  • Feasibility Research: Study how global engineering designs might theoretically be optimised, exploring concepts like modular construction and system co-location.

2. Safety Case & Risk Management

  • Hazard Modelling: Develop capabilities in high-level hazard identification and risk modelling using methodologies such as Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) and Fault Tree Analysis to understand theoretical failure modes.

  • Safety Case Research: Study the development of safety cases to understand how deterministic and probabilistic engineering controls align.

  • Technical Standards Governance: Build frameworks to evaluate how design modifications might affect the overall integrity of a technology's safety envelope.

3. Strategic Technical Partnerships

  • Technical Collaboration: Coordinate with international engineering consultants and research organizations to facilitate knowledge transfer and capability building.

  • Standards Advocacy: Act as a technical lead in researching how international engineering standards can be applied to optimise advanced technology for compact land-use constraints.

  • Technology Horizon Scanning: Monitor global trends in advanced nuclear technology (e.g., SMRs and Generation IV systems) to provide data-driven technical insights to senior leadership.

[What we are looking for]

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nuclear, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering or other relevant engineering fields.

Preferred Experience

  • 8–10 years of engineering experience in high-complexity engineering environments (e.g., Power Utilities, Aerospace, Oil & Gas, or Chemicals).

  • Familiarity with international nuclear standards (e.g., IAEA SSR-2/1) and advanced risk assessment tools (HAZID/HAZOP, LOPA).

  • Experience with international codes (ASME, EN/ISO, etc).

  • Experience with deterministic, probabilistic, quantitative safety assessments and methodology.

  • Safety case development / process safety experience for Major Hazards Industries (MHI) in Singapore

Competencies and Other Requirements

  • Safety Culture mindset.

  • Design for safety, and maintainability.

  • Critical review of vendor technical documentation.

  • Technical writing for regulatory submissions.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesise technical, and policy considerations.

  • Openness to being stationed overseas for extended periods (3 months –2 years) for specialised training and attachments.

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.
