Job Description

This role is responsible leading the design, implementation, and support commissioning of protective relaying systems for the BWRX-300 Small Module Nuclear Reactor. You will be the technical anchor for our grid interface projects, supporting our customers with development of technical grid system impact assessments.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • System Design: Develop comprehensive P&C packages, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Relay Settings & Logic: Perform short-circuit studies and coordination studies to develop settings for digital relays (GE, SEL, Siemens, etc.).
  • Grid Interconnection : Ensure compliance with utility interconnection requirements ( such as NERC, NPCC or regional interconnect rules) and manage technical communications with grid operators.
  • Prepare Electrical Engineer Deliverables: Prepare electrical engineering deliverables such as Requirements Specifications, Electrical Load Lists, One-lines, Calculations, Schematics and 3-Line lines. Ensure deliverables are on-spec., on-budget, and on-schedule.
  • Equipment Specification: Select and specify protection equipment, instrument transformers (CTs/VTs), and control switchgear..
  • Regulatory Compliance: Navigate regulatory requirements (CA-CNSC and US-NRC), support licensing processes, ensuring all designs meet nuclear-specific standards.
  • Compliance with Codes and standards: Applications of codes and standards applicable to electrical systems design in the US and CA (e.g. IEEE, IEC, CSA and NEC); European Union (eg. IEC, EU)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • US (PE), Canada (P.Eng.), or equal international
  • 8+ years experience with P&C design for substations, industrial power systems or renewable energy plants.
  • 4+ years of experience using power analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, or ASPEN Oneliner.
  • 4+ years of experience with symmetrical components and fault analysis, specifically:
    • Line protection (21, 87L)
    • Transformer protection (87T, 50/51)
    • Bus and Breaker Failure protection (87B, 50BF)
    • Generator Protection (87G, 59N, 64G)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • For the United States the preferred work location for this role is at the GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy Headquarters in Wilmington, NC; but highly qualified (US based) remote candidates will be considered.

  • This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

  • For Canada this role requires working two days a week onsite in the Markham Ontario office.

  • For Canada GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in Canada for this opening.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering for Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or equivalent year technical degree.
  • Excellent PC as well as productivity software [e.g.; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio].
  • Ability to design and draft, independently produce finish products using AutoCad or MicroStation
  • Experience using modern digital engineering collaboration and design tools such as:
    • Hexagon Smart Electrical (SPEL)
    • Content creation [e.g., Confluence/Atlassian],
    • Requirements management [e.g., DOORS-NextGen/IBM, MS Team Center],
    • Diagram and drawing [e.g., Visio/Microsoft, AutoCAD/Autodesk],
    • Design and analysis simulation [e.g., Easy5/MSC, Simulink-MATLAB/MathWorks, Mathcad/PTC, 3KeyMaster/WSC, ETAP, SKM],
    • Change, configuration, document, and bill of material (BOM) management [e.g., ENOVIA/Dassault-Systems].

For candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $126,000 and $176,000 CAD. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.
