Our teams of highly skilled engineers and designers use cutting-edge software and technology, to enhance the driving experience and reduce environmental impact.
Are you passionate about shaping the future of electric mobility? Do you thrive on innovating cutting-edge e-motor control technologies that power the next generation of Mercedes-Benz electrified vehicles? We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated E-Motor Control Engineer to join our dynamic global team, where you will play a pivotal role in advancing our e-motor control systems from concept to production.
Your Mission: As an E-Motor Control Engineer, you will be at the forefront of developing, validating, and optimizing sophisticated e-motor control algorithms and software. You will drive innovation in our methods, tools, and processes, establishing best practices for e-motor analysis, control, and testing. Your expertise will directly contribute to delivering exceptional performance and customer satisfaction in our plug-in hybrids, other electrified vehicles, and future development programs.
Job Responsibilities:
- Innovate & Develop Algorithms: Design, develop, and refine e-motor control algorithms using model-based design tools like Simulink/Target Link, including automated code generation.
- Validate & Verify Systems: Perform rigorous algorithm verification and validation through advanced simulation, motor emulator, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and dynamometer (dyno) tests.
- Calibrate & Optimize Performance: Lead the calibration of electric motor control software to meet stringent performance, functionality, and diagnostic requirements for electrified powertrains.
- Test & Assure Quality: Support production release testing by designing, maintaining, and executing comprehensive test cases for model-based EM-Controls software, utilizing both automated scripts and manual tests on Dyno, motor emulator, and HILs. Process test data to generate insightful reports.
- Troubleshoot & Resolve Issues: Diagnose and resolve complex issues within E-drive systems, ensuring robust performance and seamless integration.
- Collaborate & Coordinate: Coordinate testing activities across different groups and provide essential support to cross-functional teams, internal stakeholders, and suppliers on requirements, functionality, and issue resolution.
- Manage Requirements & Strategy: Create, maintain, and manage motor control requirements using product lifecycle management (PLM) tools, ensuring adherence to Mercedes-Benz development processes and providing key project metrics.
- Support Future Planning: Contribute to capacity planning based on future motors, power electronics, and software variants.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: MS Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, preferably with a focus on control algorithms.
- E-Motor Control Expertise: 5+ years of relevant work experience. Theoretical and practical understanding of AC IPM/Induction motors and their control for automotive applications, coupled with proven experience in model-based design, simulation, and algorithm development using MATLAB/Simulink/Target Link.
- Tool Proficiency: Expertise in calibration tools (e.g., Vector CANape, INCA, LabVIEW) and proficiency in scripting for data processing, reporting, interfacing with data acquisition equipment, and test automation frameworks. Experience in leveraging AI tools to optimize development processes and enhance efficiency.
- Automotive Software Acumen: Familiarity with automotive software development processes, including requirement management and engineering, aligned with automotive SPICE.
- Project Management & Problem Solving: Self-driven with excellent organizational skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a strong sense of ownership to ensure project timing and goals are met.
- Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional oral, written, and presentation communication skills for effective cross-functional interaction and collaboration.
- Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields
- Advanced theoretical knowledge and research experience in motor control strategies and their application
- Hands-on experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems, motor emulators, and dynamometers for testing and validation
- Understanding of motor control hardware design, circuit design, high-power inverters, driver stages, and PCB layout, along with control logic
- German language is a plus
This position may involve access to export-controlled technology, hardware, or software under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), 15 C.F.R. Parts 730-774 and possibly technical data, defense articles and defense services subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), 22 C.F.R. Parts 120-130. As such, Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America may be required to obtain an export license or authorization in accordance with United States law.
