Melbourne | Newcastle | Sydney

Downer is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team, based in Melbourne, Newcastle, or Sydney. This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering complex projects.

Operating across the full asset lifecycle, Downer delivers integrated solutions spanning design, manufacture, heavy overhaul, fleet maintenance, operations, and through‑life engineering support This depth of capability, combined with our ongoing programme of fleet upgrades and asset optimisation, continues to drive sustained demand for high‑calibre engineers.

We are now seeking Senior Mechanical Engineers with strong passenger and / or freight rolling stock experience to play a key role in the delivery of rolling stock projects within our growing engineering portfolio.

About the Role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality mechanical engineering outcomes that underpin safety, reliability, and performance across active rolling stock fleets.

You will be engaged on technically complex work, supporting both new and in‑service assets, and providing engineering leadership across long‑term rolling stock programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Producing and supporting engineering deliverables for project support for both internal and external customers.
  • Developing engineering specifications, calculations, layouts, production drawings, technical reports, and cost estimates.
  • Defining system requirements and delivering reference designs for new and modified mechanical systems.
  • Integrating mechanical systems into rolling stock in line with regulatory and industry standards.
  • Supporting investigations, engineering change, and complex technical problem‑solving across rolling stock assets.

What We’re Looking For

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Proven experience in rolling stock engineering.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured engineering documentation.
  • Solid digital capability, including experience working with engineering systems, asset data, and technical records.
  • A collaborative, solutions‑focused mindset with a commitment to safety, quality, and engineering excellence.
  • Experience in engineering consulting will be highly regarded.
