Senior Embedded Software Engineer
Your Impact
You will be working on sophisticated, industrial, real-time systems involving embedded Linux platforms, industrial communications, edge computing, data acquisition, and desktop software applications. This team of engineers develops innovative monitoring systems used for Grid Monitoring, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), Generation, and other critical electrical infrastructure applications.
As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, development, and support of software for mission-critical monitoring and diagnostic products used throughout the electrical power industry. Working closely with Systems, Hardware, Test, Firmware, and Product Management teams, you will develop software spanning embedded Linux platforms, edge applications, industrial communications, desktop software, engineering tools, and system integration layers.
You will contribute across the complete product lifecycle, from requirements definition and architecture through implementation, integration, verification, release, and sustaining engineering. Leveraging modern software engineering practices, including AI-assisted development, code analysis, debugging, and test automation tools where appropriate, you will help deliver robust, secure, maintainable, and scalable products that support critical electrical infrastructure around the world.
Here’s where you’ll demonstrate your proficiencies:
- Design, develop, maintain, and debug software for embedded Linux platforms, edge devices, desktop applications, and engineering tools.
- Develop high-quality software solutions using C++, C#, Python, or other appropriate programming languages.
- Develop Linux-based applications, services, data processing components, communications software, and system management functions.
- Develop desktop applications, configuration utilities, diagnostic tools, visualisation tools, and user interfaces.
- Implement and maintain industrial communications protocols including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, OPC-UA, and related technologies.
- Develop software for data acquisition, event processing, diagnostics, analytics, reporting, communications, and product configuration.
- Support integration across embedded devices, networking infrastructure, databases, cloud services, desktop applications, and wider product ecosystems.
- Work with Systems, Hardware, Firmware, Software, and Test Engineers to deliver integrated product solutions.
- Perform root-cause analysis, debugging, and performance optimisation across complex software systems.
- Develop and support automated testing, regression testing, continuous integration, and software quality verification.
- Support cybersecurity, secure communications, compliance, and secure software development initiatives.
- Contribute to software architecture, design reviews, technical risk assessment, and product lifecycle decisions.
- Utilise AI-assisted development, code review, debugging, documentation, and test generation tools to improve engineering productivity and software quality.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering practices, tools, and development processes.
- Work within Agile Scrum teams to support efficient product delivery, continuous improvement, and long-term product reliability.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum five years of industry experience developing embedded software, Linux-based applications, desktop applications, or software-based industrial products.
- Strong proficiency in C++ and modern software development practices.
- Experience developing applications, services, or system-level software on Linux-based platforms.
- Experience developing desktop software applications using C#, .NET, Qt, Java, or similar technologies.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, design patterns, modular design, and software lifecycle management.
- Extensive hands-on experience developing, debugging, and optimising multithreaded software applications in Linux environments, including thread scheduling, synchronisation mechanisms, inter-process communication, resource management, and performance analysis.
- Experience with networking, distributed systems, and real-time or near-real-time software environments.
- Experience developing software for data acquisition, communications, diagnostics, configuration, or monitoring applications.
- Experience developing or supporting industrial communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, OPC-UA, or similar.
- Experience with software debugging, system troubleshooting, performance analysis, and root-cause investigation.
- Experience using version control systems such as Git and modern software development workflows.
- Experience with automated testing, unit testing, integration testing, and software quality practices.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, interpersonal, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a cross-functional engineering team.
Preferred Skills
- Experience developing products for the electrical power, utility, industrial automation, monitoring, or critical infrastructure sectors.
- Experience with embedded Linux distributions, edge computing platforms, or industrial computing environments.
- Experience with Yocto, Buildroot, Debian-based embedded systems, or similar Linux environments.
- Experience with desktop UI frameworks such as Qt, WPF, WinForms, Blazor, Electron, or web-based user interfaces.
- Experience with databases, REST APIs, message brokers, telemetry systems, or modern connectivity frameworks.
- Experience with cloud-connected products, remote monitoring systems, device management, or distributed architectures.
- Experience with Ethernet networking, managed switches, PTP, NTP, time synchronisation, or SCADA connectivity.
- Experience troubleshooting communications using packet capture and analysis tools such as Wireshark.
- Experience with Digital Fault Recording (DFR), Power Quality (PQ), PMU, GIS monitoring, transformer monitoring, partial discharge monitoring, or related power system applications.
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles, secure communications, authentication mechanisms, vulnerability management, and secure software development practices.
- Familiarity with IEC 62443 or other cybersecurity standards for industrial systems would be advantageous.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated build systems, static analysis, software quality tools, and DevOps practices.
- Experience using AI-assisted software development tools and Large Language Model (LLM) technologies to improve software development, testing, documentation, and engineering efficiency.
- Experience using engineering collaboration tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
- Familiarity with Agile Scrum development methodologies.
- Exposure to firmware, embedded devices, or hardware/software integration would be advantageous, but this is not a low-level firmware or bare-metal development role.s, and leave a lasting mark on the world.
