Job Title: Sr. EHS Specialist

Location: Piscataway, NJ (Fully Onsite)

Reports to: Director of US Site Operations

Compensation: The estimated salary range is $85,000 - $100,000, based on experience.

Job Overview:

We're looking for a hands-on Senior EHS Specialist for our New Jersey research labs, including BSL-2 areas. You'll help build out EHS programs at our existing labs, bring EHS into the design of new facilities early, and manage safety on our construction projects. You'll work independently and own your programs from start to finish.

Job Responsibilities:

• Build and run EHS programs at our existing labs, including chemical hygiene, hazard communication, PPE, lockout/tagout and waste management, and write the procedures and training that go with them
• Support BSL-2 biosafety: biological waste, spill response, lab audits
• Run regular lab and facility inspections, and check safety equipment such as fume hoods, eyewash stations, safety showers and fire extinguishers
• Keep the chemical inventory and SDS library current, and make sure chemicals are stored and labeled correctly
• Do exposure monitoring where needed, such as air sampling or noise checks, and set up controls based on the results
• Review new equipment, lab moves and process changes for EHS risks before they go live
• Review facility designs for EHS issues, such as lab layout, ventilation, chemical and biological storage and egress, and follow those items through construction and startup
• Oversee contractor safety on our construction sites: review safety plans, issue work permits, walk the site and follow up on findings
• Keep emergency response plans current and run drills
• Train new hires, lab staff and contractors, and keep training records
• Investigate incidents and near misses, find root causes and make sure fixes get done
• Keep OSHA logs, NJ Right to Know filings, waste manifests, permits and other records up to date, and help during regulator and insurer visits
• Track EHS metrics and report on open issues

How We Work:

This is not a desk job. We need someone who walks the labs and job sites, finds the problem and fixes it, rather than writing a report about it and moving on. You'll own your programs, meaning you will follow up until projects or tasks are completed, not just raising issues for other people to solve. We operate as a lean team, so everyone rolls up their sleeves. If you like building things from the ground up and seeing the results, you'll fit in here.

Qualifications:

• A bachelor's degree in EHS, environmental science, engineering or a related field, and 5+ years of EHS work
• Experience in research labs or biotech/pharma, ideally including BSL-2
• Experience working on facility design reviews and construction site safety
• CSP, ASP, CHMM or a similar certification is a plus
