This position manages and provides professional EHS leadership and guidance to key portions of the La-Z-Boy enterprise. Directly responsible for all issues involving Plant Safety/Health, OSHA compliance, Safety Training, Development/ maintenance of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)Policy and Procedures, Site Security, and Managing the Worker’s Compensation system at a single location with multiple business units. This position manages multiple direct reports as well as a nursing and security team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned):

  • Establish and promote a work environment that is, and continues to be, safe and healthy. Ensures that occupational environmental, health and safety hazards within the company are identified, evaluated and controlled in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop, recommend and implement policies and procedures to control occupational environmental, health and safety hazards and the risks associated with company operations. Communicate and continue to foster a safety culture that goes beyond that which is mandated.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate reporting and accountability systems. Maintain company compliance with all appropriate Federal and Local EHS regulations.
  • Establish and ensure that all applicable Environmental permitting and reporting requirements are met and that the facility follows all local and federal laws.
  • Ensure that all departments comply with applicable environmental, health and safety regulations, and equally important, with the company’s philosophy of assuring worker safety which is frequently more stringent than OSHA code or environmental regulations.
  • Serve as primary advisor regarding EHS issues for all management levels throughout the site. Responsible for emphasizing the importance of environment, health and safety within the line management.
  • Maintain close contact with government and related industry management and environmental, health and safety organizational personnel. Establish and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies to ensure the company’s ability to comment on proposed or drafted requirements. Coordinate the internal resources required to analyze pending regulation or legislation, present for consideration of management the impact of such mandates, and communicate the company’s position.
  • Responsible for leading, directing and managing all worker compensation activities.
  • Manage relationships between treating physicians and La-Z-Boy.
  • Responsible to establish relationships and manage all communication to attorneys; direct/hire attorneys to represent La-Z-Boy in litigated workers compensation claims.
  • Directly involved in all safety aspects of their assigned production facilities, including but not limited to development of safety operating systems, ergonomic considerations and hazard identification and control.
  • Manage and lead investigations on incidents/accidents/near misses and ensure follow up on all actions that lead to root cause eliminations.
  • Promote and lead aspects of the Residential Division and Corporate EHS Agenda. Including project management and implementation of corporate wide projects and systems.

SCOPE & IMPACT:

Responsible for managing Worker's Compensation costs of $50K - $6.5 million; manage and lead OSHA compliance initiatives and potential fine mitigation; manages overall environmental, safety and health system for the location. Directs environmental compliance to mitigate possible fines, reduce environmental impact and protect La-Z-Boy’s reputation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environment, Health, and Safety or related field with 6-8 years of relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • 5 – 8 years supervisory/leadership of EHS in a manufacturing environment
  • Up to 15% travel.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proven success leading, developing and/or implementing a safety operating system.
  • Knowledge of applicable state regulations.
  • Certification in a specialized EHS field (i.e. Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Environmental Engineering, etc.)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages a team of up to 7 direct or indirect reports
