Job Description

CHEP helps move more goods to more people, in more places than any other organization on earth via our 347 million pallets, crates and containers. We employ approximately 13,000 people and operate in 60 countries. Through our pioneering and sustainable share-and-reuse business model, the world’s biggest brands trust us to help them transport their goods more efficiently, safely and with less environmental impact.

What does that mean for you? You’ll join an international organization big enough to take you anywhere, and small enough to get you there sooner. You’ll help change how goods get to market and contribute to global sustainability. You’ll be empowered to bring your authentic self to work and be surrounded by diverse and driven professionals. And you can maximize your work-life balance and flexibility through our Hybrid Work Model

CHEP is seeking a collaborative, forward-thinking Senior Director, Process Engineering to guide automation, engineering, and technical systems across our North American network. In this role, you will advance innovation, operational excellence, and safety through modern automation strategies and large-scale transformation initiatives.

In this role you will lead a high-performing, diverse, and geographically dispersed team, partnering closely with Supply Chain, Operations, Logistics, IT, Quality, Health & Safety, Procurement, and global engineering teams. This role is instrumental in shaping CHEP’s “Plant of the Future” and supporting our digitization journey across both CHEP-owned and third‑party-operated facilities.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide inclusive, empowering leadership for Process Engineering, Automation, and Technical Systems teams across North America.
  • Lead the full life cycle of automation and capital engineering initiatives—from concept through implementation and integration with operations.
  • Foster a Zero Harm culture, ensuring all engineering and automation projects support the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance.
  • Ensure consistent execution of automation standards across the network, while collaborating with global and regional partners.
  • Guide maintenance strategies that improve equipment reliability, effectiveness, and sustainability while balancing cost and performance.
  • Develop and champion strategies for equipment digitization, serialization, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Establish and use standardized process and equipment performance metrics to support continuous improvement.
  • Strengthen technical capability across the organization through training, mentorship, and talent development programs.
  • Partner with Supply Chain, Finance, and Operations leaders to identify and deliver productivity, capacity, and cost optimization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Health & Safety teams to deliver projects that enhance product quality and create safer working environments.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with equipment suppliers, engineering service providers, and third‑party operators.
  • Support global standardization efforts by engaging with engineering leaders across regions.

What You’ll Bring

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Structural, or a related engineering discipline.
  • MBA or equivalent professional experience is a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certification (or equivalent experience) preferred.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in engineering, automation, and/or supply chain leadership in manufacturing or operations environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading large, complex capital and automation programs.
  • Experience working within matrixed, multi‑site, and geographically dispersed teams.
  • Experience leading and developing large teams (this role will lead a team of ~50).

Skills & Capabilities

  • Inclusive and supportive leadership style with excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to confidently and collaboratively engage with senior leaders and external partners.
  • A balance of strategic vision and willingness to stay connected to day‑to‑day execution.
  • Expertise in capital project justification, engineering standards, and automation technologies.
  • Strong financial and business acumen related to capital planning and operational performance.
  • Proficiency with project management and engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement and advanced manufacturing concepts is advantageous.

Why Join CHEP
