The Senior Director of Platform Engineering is a senior, second-line engineering leader accountable for the strategy, delivery, security and reliability of Sunrise’s software platform. Leading through subordinate engineering managers and senior individual contributors, this role owns four interdependent disciplines – application development, cloud infrastructure, cloud and application security and the people organization that delivers them. The Senior Director sets multi-year engineering strategy in partnership with executive leadership, owns the engineering operating budget and cloud spend and is accountable for the scalability, observability and maintainability of production systems that support the enterprise mission. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: the incumbent is expected to set architectural direction and engineering standards, not merely manage to them.

RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Duties

As a part of the Sunrise team, supporting our Mission, Principles of Service and Core Values is a fundamental part of this job. Our foundational belief is the sacred value of human life. The unique responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to the essential functions listed as follows:

Team Leadership and People Management

  • Lead, mentor and grow a multi-team engineering organization through subordinate engineering managers and senior individual contributors.
  • Own hiring, performance management, succession planning and organizational design across the function.
  • Cultivate a culture of innovation, high performance and continuous improvement.

Strategic Planning

  • Develop and execute long-term (multi-year) engineering strategy that aligns with the company's broader mission and goals, translating corporate objectives into a technical roadmap, capacity plan and investment case.

Application Development

  • Direct the full software development lifecycle across the application portfolio, setting engineering standards, architectural direction and delivery accountability across multiple product and platform teams.

Cloud Infrastructure Development

  • Own the strategy, architecture and operation of cloud infrastructure (compute, network, identity and data), including reliability, scaling and cloud-cost (FinOps) accountability for the platform estate.

Cloud and Application Security

  • Hold accountability for the security posture of applications and cloud infrastructure, partnering with information security and compliance on identity, controls, vulnerability management and audit readiness across the engineering estate.

Observability, Scaling and Maintenance

  • Establish observability, performance and reliability practices (SLOs, monitoring, incident response and lifecycle maintenance) that sustain availability and scale as demand grows.

Budget and Vendor Ownership

  • Own the engineering operating and capital budget, including headcount planning, vendor and SaaS contracts and cloud spend; accountable for cost-to-serve and the return on platform investments.

Executive Partnership

  • Serve as the senior engineering voice to executive leadership across Technology, Product, Finance and Compliance, representing platform strategy, risk and trade-offs in enterprise planning and the annual operating-budget process.
  • Maintain compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or other regulating authorities as applicable to this role to ensure that Sunrise standards are always met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Core Competencies

  • Second-Line Leadership — Leading engineering managers and senior individual contributors at scale.
  • Strategic and Systems Thinking — Translating business strategy into multi-year technical direction.
  • Technical Breadth and Depth — Hands-on proficiency across application development, cloud infrastructure and cloud/application security.
  • Operational Excellence — Observability, reliability, scaling and maintenance of production systems.
  • Financial Acumen — Ownership of engineering budget, vendor contracts and cloud-cost optimization.
  • Executive Communication — Cross-functional influence with Product, Finance and Compliance leadership.
  • Talent Development and Organizational Design — Building, structuring and scaling high-performing engineering teams.

Experience and Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed throughout this job description are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive software and platform engineering experience, including a minimum of 5 years leading engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated second-line leadership experience — managing engineering managers in addition to senior individual contributors.
  • Proven ownership of application development, cloud infrastructure and cloud/application security at enterprise scale.
  • Deep, hands-on proficiency with application development, observability, scaling and the maintenance of production systems.
  • Experience owning an engineering operating budget, vendor relationships and cloud-cost optimization.
  • Track record of defining and executing multi-year engineering strategy aligned to business goals.
