Senior Director of Content and Messaging: JOB DESCRIPTION

About the Role:

Reporting to the Executive Vice President of Communications, the Senior Director of Content and Messaging shapes the voice of All Voting is Local ("All Voting"), drives editorial strategy, and ensures consistent messaging across all channels to boost All Voting’s awareness and pipeline growth. This position involves work for both All Voting and AVL Action.

Core Role Responsibilities:

  • Strategy & Messaging: Develop comprehensive messaging frameworks, narratives, and brand guidelines using best practices and poll-tested guidance to ensure consistency.
  • Content Leadership: Own the editorial calendar and lead copywriting and content creation (blogs, white papers, videos, social) that support full-funnel organizational objectives.
    • Content creation for high-level / high-visibility organizational products (e.g. annual report, research papers, donor communications)
  • Thought Leadership: Create executive-level narratives, bylines, and speeches that position senior leaders as industry experts.
    • Rapid response messaging as well as opportunities that are planned.
  • Personnel Management: Support and lead a team of two managers, overseeing executive and digital communications to create strategic and visionary content that meets the moment.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work across the organization’s teams, coordinating with program, policy and analytics, and development staff, to deliver content that meets the need of the organization, uplifting successes and shifting the narrative around threats.
  • Ability to travel to attend organizational retreats, functions, and events; occasionally work on-site at All Voting's Washington, D.C. office.

Core Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Develop, work toward, and successfully accomplish OKRs for the Communications department.
  • Navigate and utilize All Voting's various platforms (e.g., Asana, Google Workspace, Slack) and methods (M.O.C.H.A.) to see work through to satisfactory completion.
  • Liaise with All Voting team members, as necessary, on communication, follow-up, and other applicable projects, initiatives, and deliverables.
  • Regular travel to convenings, conferences, and critical meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or relevant work experience.
  • Eight to ten years of relevant communications and/or public relations experience, including direct experience engaging with media.
  • Five or more years of experience working in a communications capacity with national non-profits or NGOs.
  • Proven success in the ability to understand multiple and diverse audiences to develop content focused on their specific needs and interests.
  • An excellent writer who can quickly learn and adapt to All Voting’s tone and voice.
  • Excellent strategic and innovative thinker with the ability to break down concepts into actionable steps to execute and follow through from development through completion.
  • Is curious and inquisitive with excellent listening and writing skills to quickly develop focused talking points, press releases, statements, and other national-level communications materials; works well under pressure and on tight deadlines.
  • Is proactive, self-initiated, and inclusive with an experienced ability to actively manage expectations, seek guidance, problem solve, and closely collaborate with colleagues (at all levels and styles) and external partners.
  • Technologically savvy: Google Suite, digital media tools (e.g. Muck Rack, Meltwater), project management systems (e.g. Asana, Slack).
  • Ability to travel to All Voting’s DC office for working sessions with relevant staff and for retreats or other organizational needs; may require occasional evening and weekend working hours during critical and/or peak periods.

Advanced Qualifications & Competencies | Not Required

  • Master's Degree in public relations or its equivalent.
  • Demonstrated success (at least five years of experience) managing teams, budgets, and complex strategies in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • Experience or knowledge of voting rights or election administration issues.
  • Minimum of five years of experience with media training principals and senior leadership team members.
  • Fluency in a second language.
  • Has built and comes into the role with a robust rolodex of media contacts and relationships to enhance the organization's work and expand existing connections.
  • Experienced storyteller and is able to connect the dots across different mediums and messaging to ensure a cohesive and singular brand voice; proven ability to collaborate positively with colleagues to interpret and telegraph an organization’s voice at a national level.

This position is currently remote, with some in-person requirements in Washington, D.C.
