The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) is seeking a strategic, technically skilled, and collaborative leader to join its finance team as the Senior Director, Grant Management and Financial Planning. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this senior position is responsible for two critical functions: overseeing the financial stewardship and compliance of a complex, multi-million-dollar grants portfolio, and leading the organization’s annual and long-term budgeting process.

This role serves as a key financial partner to leadership and staff across the entire organization. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader adept at building and improving systems, fostering a culture of financial accountability, and translating complex financial data into actionable insights for diverse audiences. This position will lead a small but skilled team and play a vital role in ensuring CAFB maximizes its resources to fulfill its mission.

Essential Functions:

Grant Management & Compliance – 45%

Leads the financial management and administration for CAFB’s grants portfolio, which includes significant federal funding sourced through state and local entities, as well as foundation, corporate, and individual awards.

  • Ensures excellence in award management and strict compliance with all grant terms, conditions, and regulations, particularly for complex government contracts.
  • Serves as a primary financial point of contact for government funding agencies, building and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Develops and maintains robust systems for the efficient financial management of grants, including timely recordation of expenses (cash and in-kind), accurate financial reporting, and efficient close-out processes.
  • Partners closely with program managers to ensure seamless grant implementation by developing and disseminating clear tools, templates, and guidelines for the entire award lifecycle. This includes establishing standardized processes for grant kick-off meetings, budget monitoring, programmatic and financial reporting, and compliant close-out procedures.
  • Manages and mentors a team of two grant management professionals, with the autonomy to structure the team to meet organizational needs.
  • Collaborates with the Development team on proposal budgets and financial reporting to private funders.

Budget Management & Strategic Partnership – 35%

In partnership with the CFO, directs the systems, tools, and processes for managing the organization's annual operating budget and long-term financial planning.

  • Serves as the primary liaison and financial guide for department leaders throughout the full-cycle budget process, from initial preparation to final negotiations and approval.
  • Leads the annual budget process, ensuring a collaborative and transparent approach that aligns with strategic priorities.
  • Continuously monitors organizational and departmental budget performance, providing program leaders with actionable insights and analyses to ensure compliance and on-time implementation of grant-funded activities.
  • Identifies and analyzes budget variances, helping align resources, address budget gaps, and provides strategic recommendations to the CFO and executive team.

Financial Systems & Process Improvement – 20%

Drives the continuous improvement of budget and grant management systems and processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.

  • Evaluates and enhances workflows related to grant and budget management.
  • In partnership with the CFO, develops and maintains an organizational budget management system.
  • Designs budget templates and financial reporting tools.
  • Develops, enhances, and maintains financial dashboards for use by stakeholders across the organization.
  • Identifies opportunities for automation and leverages technology to streamline reporting and analysis.
  • In partnership with IT and Analytics, leverages technology to deliver dynamic financial scenarios, predictive modeling, and other advanced data use cases to inform improved financial or operational performance.

  • Deep understanding of nonprofit financial management principles and the complexities of managing and blending restricted and unrestricted funding streams.

  • Functional literacy in SQL or similar code-based tools to leverage large datasets and prepare them for analysis and reporting. Candidates do not need to be expert coders, but they must be confident working 'under the hood' in a data environment to extract and structure data and analyses.
  • Proven ability to manage and mentor staff.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, high emotional intelligence, and a proven ability to negotiate and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.

About Capital Area Food Bank

The Capital Area Food Bank works to address hunger today and create brighter futures tomorrow for more than 1 million people across the region experiencing food insecurity. As the anchor in the area’s hunger relief infrastructure, the food bank provided nearly 61 million meals last year to people in need each year by supplying food to hundreds of nonprofit organizations, including Martha’s Table, SOME – So Others Might Eat, DC Central Kitchen, Food for Others, Manna, and others. But we don’t stop there, because we know that creating long-term solutions to hunger requires more than meals. It requires education, training, and opportunity. In short, it demands ideas that address the big picture. That’s why we’re approaching the problem in multiple ways: providing food for today, and addressing the root causes of hunger by partnering with organizations that provide critical services like job training programs and health care.
