GEICO is seeking an experienced attorney to lead its Employment Litigation and HR Investigations team within the Employment Law Group. Reporting to the Head of Employment Law, the Senior Director, Employment Litigation and HR Investigations, will be primarily responsible for managing the company’s single-plaintiff and class/collective action employment litigation and administrative charge dockets and for driving effective and efficient defense and resolution strategies.

The ideal candidate will have at least 12 years of progressively complex employment litigation experience in a law firm, government agency and/or large in-house legal department. The successful candidate will also have significant experience advising business clients and stakeholders on complex workplace investigations and related risk mitigation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Litigation Management:
  • Serve as a senior legal leader for GEICO’s Employment litigation portfolio.
  • Manage the team handling all phases of litigation (discovery, motions, trial, appeal) and investigations; manage outside counsel, budgets, and fee negotiations.
  • Oversee and drive continuous improvement of litigation operations, including legal intake processes, workflows, metrics, and reporting.
  • Legal Strategy and Transformation
  • Translate company strategy and executive leadership goals into practical, executable legal priorities, driving alignment and accountability across the litigation organization.
  • Develop cost-effective strategies for defending and resolving employment claims, identify risks, and implement procedures for exceptional legal service delivery.
  • Lead and support enterprise transformation initiatives, including change management and strategic communications related to employment litigation.
  • Business Advising
  • Provide counsel to business partners on escalated disputes, integrate legal considerations into business decisions, and advise on risk.
  • Provide proactive legal advice on complex litigation risk, discovery strategy, and evolving legal issues impacting GEICO’s business.
  • Advise senior leadership and participate in strategic initiatives impacting GEICO’s risk profile, operational effectiveness, and long-term growth.
  • Leadership & Cross-functional Work
  • Partner with business leaders and operations, to deliver practical, risk-based legal solutions aligned with business objectives.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team of attorneys who themselves manage litigation matters, ensuring strong oversight, prioritization, and execution.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with outside counsel and key internal stakeholders and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Current or recent experience operating at the Senior Director level or above (or equivalent), with demonstrated accountability for enterprise-level outcomes and leadership of managers.
  • 12+ years of legal experience, including significant experience in single-plaintiff and class/collective employment litigation
  • Experience in conducting, managing and/or advising clients on complex workplace investigations
  • Demonstrated experience managing attorneys who handle litigation, with the ability to operate through layers while staying close to the work.
  • Strong understanding of litigation risk and the regulatory environment impacting the workplace and employers.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to leverage data to drive efficiency, accuracy, and sound decision making.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-house insurance industry-related experience
  • Working knowledge AI/automated productivity and workflow automation tools

Location

Hybrid: This position is a hybrid role and will require 3 days working onsite in the Bethesda, MD office.

Annual Salary

$210,000.00 - $350,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
