The Senior Director will possess strong scientific and business acumen with deep business development experience in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industry. A strong understanding of the deal making process in the industry is required as the candidate will be responsible for leading transaction related activities across all therapeutic areas, developmental stages and deal types for Japan and Korea opportunities. This individual is required to have efficient interpersonal skills as they will work with multiple senior internal stakeholders to lead scouting activities and evaluation of novel therapeutic opportunities for both licensing and M&A in Japan and Korea.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary BD partner for BD opportunities in Japan and Korea. Partner with local cross-functional teams to deliver assessments of technical/commercial risks and team recommendations of external opportunities for BMS governance endorsement, integrating high-level stakeholder input and senior management review
  • Lead search, evaluation, and certain diligence efforts for BD opportunities in Oncology, Cell Therapy, Hematology, Immunology, Cardiovascular, Neuroscience, and other relevant therapeutic areas to BMS strategy globally and locally.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, strategic judgment, and business acumen while collaborating closely with the Global Business Development team, the local leadership teams and business partners, as well as with external partners.
  • Conduct triaging and initial assessment of select inbound BD opportunities and make initial go/no go recommendations
  • Facilitate formulation of Japan and Korea BD strategies (e.g., focus indications, target MOAs, potential partners, etc.) while driving the execution of external business development elements
  • Lead, coach, and mentor team members in deal execution and negotiations, including resolving complex issues, communicating risks and trade‑offs, and reviewing term sheets and contracts drafted by Legal to ensure alignment with business intent.
  • Lead and participate in BD external partnering events and technical / scientific meetings locally, support the preparation of materials such as presentations, FAQ and related documents.
  • Support agreement negotiation and contracting as needed
  • Manage and coach direct reports as applicable.
  • International travel required


Qualifications & Experience

  • MD, PhD, PharmD, or other advanced degree in the biomedical field required.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience within the biopharmaceutical industry or related biotech/healthcare practice (e.g., consulting, investment banking, venture capital) and minimum of 3 years of relevant business development experience
  • Proven track record in leading or acting as a key contributor to a number of closed deals
  • Deep scientific knowledge in the Oncology desirable with understanding of the preclinical drug discovery and clinical development and approval process, and deep scientific curiosity and commitment to advancing therapeutic innovation that provides better options for patients
  • Proven ability to efficiently lead multiple projects in a matrixed environment with a high degree of independence
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas and lead others to accomplish challenging goals and objectives.
  • Can-do attitude and ability to work in a highly matrixed and dynamic business environment including ability to interact and communicate to senior level executives.
  • Strong ability to think holistically and long-term across a broad spectrum of industry trends and issues in Oncology and other therapeutic area as well as adjacent diseases
  • Strong interpersonal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to drive and support highly visible and time-sensitive business development projects.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work outside of regular work hours (to accommodate time zone differences)
  • International travel when required.
  • Fluency in Japanese and English required; Korean not required but an added benefit
