IronCore Project is SAP’s next generation Open Source Cloud Infrastructure based on Kubernetes. Within the IronCore team we manage physical servers, storage and network infrastructure with Kubernetes controllers – providing a modern Cloud infrastructure as a Service to SAP developers and customers. IronCore uses a modern Software Defined Everything approach as well as hardware offloading capabilities to provide a flexible, yet performant base layer for application deployments.

We’re building ApeiroRA, an open-source reference architecture that strengthens Europe’s digital sovereignty. This initiative is part of a broader movement to ensure security, sustainability, and compliance for cloud-to-edge computing. What you'll do

• Design, deploy, and operate distributed storage platforms based on Ceph and Rook for large-scale cloud environments.
• Develop and enhance storage services and APIs, including volume and snapshot management, OS image handling, and object storage.
• Help Implement and optimize high-performance storage access methods such as NVMe-oF and object storage gateways.
• Automate lifecycle management of storage clusters, including configuration tuning, scaling, and performance optimization.
• Contribute to development of storage control plane components and integrations with Kubernetes-native infrastructure.
• Improve reliability and efficiency of storage systems through monitoring, benchmarking, and capacity planning.
• Collaborate with compute and networking teams internally and as well with external partners to deliver end-to-end infrastructure capabilities.
• Develop and maintain code and contribute to IronCore open-source components, primarily written in Go.

What we're looking for

• Strong hands-on experience with Ceph (RADOS, RBD, RGW) and Kubernetes-based storage orchestration (e.g., Rook).
• Practical knowledge of storage performance tuning, data placement strategies, and cluster scaling.
• Familiarity with storage APIs and internal data structures (e.g., Ceph OMap, snapshot mechanisms, image lifecycle).
• Experience operating storage in cloud or large-scale data-center environments.
• Understanding of resilience, replication, and data protection mechanisms in distributed systems.
• Ability to build Kubernetes Operators using tools like Operator SDK or controller-runtime.
• Hands on experience in system programming language, preferably in Go.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and verbal. Proficiency in German is beneficial.
