Job Description

Responsibilities

Structural Modeling and Simulation

  • Analyze the structural performance of plastic consumer products, including strength, modulus, creep, stress relaxation, and failure risk.
  • Perform simulations for static and dynamic loading conditions, including nonlinear contact, modal response, random vibration, shock, and drop impact.
  • Interpret simulation results and provide clear recommendations to improve product design, structural performance, and reliability.
  • Identify potential design risks early and develop practical design improvement plans.
  • Develop and calibrate material and constitutive models for plastic products. Validate simulation results against test data to improve prediction accuracy.
  • Lead root-cause investigations of field failures using nonlinear FEA and manufacturing-process simulations. Reproduce failure conditions, identify design or processing issues, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Use open-source python libraries like PyAnsys and PyMechanical for secondary development as needed to automate and extend simulation workflows.

New Product Development

  • Work with product development teams from the early stages of design through commercialization.
  • Use modeling and simulation to provide feedback throughout the product development process, improve product performance, and accelerate product development.
  • Recommend key structural design parameters, such as wall thickness, ribs, and snap-fit features, based on simulation results.
  • Recommend suitable processing and manufacturing parameters using FEA and process simulations for new materials and products.
  • Support design for manufacturability (DFM) and help ensure that products can be manufactured consistently at-scale.

Technical Communication and Collaboration

  • Prepare, review, and maintain simulation reports that clearly document assumptions, methods, results, conclusions, and design decisions.
  • Ensure that simulation work is accurate, traceable, and properly documented.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations effectively to cross-functional teams.
  • Create and maintain a proprietary materials database, including measured and validated material properties for structural analysis.
  • Collaborate with research institutions, industry partners, and suppliers on advanced simulation methods and technology development.
  • Use Python and related tools, such as PyAnsys and PyMechanical, to automate and extend simulation workflows.

Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, polymer engineering, materials engineering, or a related field.
  • Preferably five years of experience using ANSYS Workbench for end-to-end modeling, solution setup, analysis, and post-processing.
  • Experience using ANSYS LS-DYNA for nonlinear and dynamic simulations.
  • Strong understanding of structural mechanics, materials science, creep, viscoelasticity, and elastic-plastic behavior.
  • Hands-on experience with static analysis, nonlinear contact, implicit and explicit dynamic analysis, modal and transient response, creep, stress relaxation, and viscoelastic material behavior.
  • Knowledge of plastic materials and manufacturing processes, including injection molding, extrusion and blow molding.
  • Experience developing, calibrating, and validating material models using test data.
  • Experience applying simulation to plastic product design, failure analysis, and manufacturing-process evaluation.
  • Ability to complete iterative design and simulation updates efficiently and accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail, including model setup, material data, boundary conditions, mesh quality, and result interpretation.
  • Systematic problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Coding experience in python to work seamlessly with Ansys simulation suites.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, with the ability to prepare technical documentation and interpret engineering standards.
