Te Tūranga - The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and hands-on Senior Design Engineer to join our talented Client Specific Development (CSD) engineering team in Christchurch.

CSD customizes our products to meet bespoke customer requirements and work closely with our services department and regional offices to deliver custom functionality across our product range including Terminals, Basestations, Infrastructure and Axiom.

This is a senior technical role focused on listening to customer problems, scoping custom solutions, costing the solution, and delivering the solution You will have detailed knowledge of at least one of our product ranges and have an interest in learning about the others. You will also have good project co-ordination and have an interest in technically leading the customization from start to finish. As CSD customizes Tait products, there is an opportunity to gain experience in other programming languages.

You will contribute technical depth, mentoring engineers, and help drive innovation that supports the delivery of world-class critical communication solutions

The duties of the role will include:

  • Capturing and analyzing requirements
  • Producing detailed design specifications and implementing robust solutions
  • Accurately sizing and costing project phases, actions, and tasks
  • Planning and documenting engineering activities to agreed standards
  • Developing and executing test specifications
  • Supporting and mentoring engineers to strengthen design capability
  • Collaborative solution problem solving and reviews
  • Demonstrating technical leadership through innovation and depth of expertise

Ō pūkenga - About You

To be successful in this role, you will have a relevant tertiary qualification (bachelor's degree, postgraduate or NZQA approved equivalent) in engineering or a related discipline, along with significant industry experience.

As well as:

  • At least 5+ years' experience in a similar role within telecommunications or technology
  • Detailed knowledge of at least one Tait product line
  • An interest in learning and customizing other Tait product lines
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and collaborate across internal and external teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging capability
  • Strong proficiency in C or C++ programming
  • An interest in learning new programming languages such as C#, Python and web based
  • An interest in lower-level embedded development
  • An interest in Smart phone application development
  • Experience across the full lifecycle of commercial product development
  • Demonstrated ability to critique and improve design quality
  • Experience mentoring and developing other engineers

Preferred experience:

  • Wireless communications (Land Mobile Radio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Cellular)
  • Linux and open-source development environments
  • Windows development environments
