Tait Communications is looking for an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join our talented Engineering team. This is a hands-on, technical leadership role where you'll help shape the future of Tait's critical communications products, and solutions that keep communities, first responders, and essential services connected and safe around the world.

Te Tūranga – The Role

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will provide expert technical leadership across the full product lifecycle. You will bring capability in engineering design, project management, strong analytical skills, leadership capability and a passion for engineering excellence.

This is a multi-disciplinary role. An ideal candidate would have interest and experience across many areas, including mechanical hardware, electronic hardware, audio systems, and embedded software. Experience in system engineering would be beneficial.

You'll be responsible for driving technical success for the strategic initiative around accessories, so that we can have more control over the end-to-end user experience of Tait products and solutions. You will work within a project team that includes both internal and partner resource – it is expected that this role will require regular collaboration with third parties.

This will involve driving innovative design outcomes, mentoring other engineers, and contributing to architecture, development, testing, and delivery of high-performing products and systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Hand-on leading and owning the delivery of accessories projects.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally throughout the project life cycle with Product, Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, and Marketing teams.
  • Supporting the technical development of other engineers through mentoring, training, and potentially direct line management.
  • Demonstrating innovation and leadership across a broad range of engineering activities
  • Actively contributing to commercial processes related to accessories including pricing and cost estimations.

To be successful in this role, you'll bring:

Required:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong practical knowledge of hardware design principles and lifecycle processes
  • Good experience in product development or new product delivery.
  • Experience or exposure working cross-functionally to deliver complex products.
  • Experience with designing, testing, and validating complex systems
  • Understanding of design practices, test reporting, component derating, and manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of quality systems such as ISO 9000, ISO 14001, Six Sigma
  • Experience reviewing designs and mentoring others
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Preferred:

  • Strong experience in a product engineering role which involves both hardware and software.
  • Experience with Tait products, markets, and customer requirements.
