Senior Database Migration Engineer (PostgreSQL/MS SQL Server) - Full Remote Portugal

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a Senior Database Migration Engineer to join an innovative international technology project focused on modernizing mission-critical data platforms. You will play a key role in designing and executing the migration of a large-scale Microsoft SQL Server environment into a modern, highly scalable PostgreSQL architecture while collaborating with experienced software engineering teams.

This is an opportunity to work on complex database modernization initiatives, influence architectural decisions, and apply modern engineering practices in a collaborative Agile environment. You will also have the chance to leverage AI-powered development tools to improve productivity and accelerate database refactoring and optimization.
The position is fully remote within Portugal, with occasional travel required based on project needs (estimated 0–15%).

PROJECT & CONTEXT

You will contribute to the transformation of a legacy monolithic database into a distributed, high-performance PostgreSQL platform capable of supporting scalable read/write workloads. Working closely with software engineers, architects, and technical stakeholders, you will be responsible for database migration strategy, schema redesign, performance optimization, and database architecture improvements.

The role combines database engineering, software engineering principles, and infrastructure knowledge, requiring strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts effectively across multidisciplinary teams. You will also explore and integrate AI-assisted engineering tools, including Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor, into your daily development workflow to increase efficiency and code quality.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

• Proven experience as a Senior Database Engineer, Database Migration Engineer, or similar role.
• Strong expertise with PostgreSQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server, with practical experience in both being highly desirable.
• Solid experience planning and executing database migration projects from MS SQL Server to PostgreSQL
• Advanced knowledge of SQL, T-SQL, and PL/SQL
• Experience designing, optimizing, and refactoring complex database schemas and queries.
• Strong understanding of database internals, indexing strategies, query optimization, partitioning, replication, and performance tuning.
• Experience working with distributed database architectures and scalable read/write environments.
• Knowledge of software engineering best practices, database architecture, and data modeling principles.
• Experience working in Agile development environments.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• English (mandatory – professional working proficiency).

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

• Hands-on experience with both PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise-scale environments.
• Previous experience modernizing legacy monolithic systems.
• Exposure to distributed database technologies and high-availability architectures.
• Experience mentoring technical teams or providing architectural guidance.
• Knowledge of cloud-based database platforms and infrastructure.
• Experience supporting international and multicultural engineering teams.
  

Compensation: €2,500 – €3,100/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
