The Leidos Defense Sector is seeking a highly qualified Senior Database Engineer to support a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering innovative planning, operational, technical, analytical, and mission support capabilities in Tampa, FL. The successful candidate will collaborate with government, military, and contractor personnel to develop solutions that enable informed decision-making, operational excellence, and mission success. Candidate must already possess a TS/SCI security clearance in order to be considered.

Note: This position is part of a future contract opportunity pending award announcement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain enterprise database solutions supporting operational systems, mission applications, Operations in the Information Environment (OIE), and organizational business processes.

  • Develop logical and physical database structures that optimize performance, scalability, reliability, and data integrity across operational and analytical environments.

  • Install, configure, administer, and maintain relational and non-relational database management systems (DBMS), ensuring continuous availability and operational performance.

  • Develop and optimize database schemas, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, views, functions, and queries that support mission-critical applications and reporting requirements.

  • Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies that improve query execution, storage efficiency, and overall system performance.

  • Develop and maintain Extract, Transform, Load (ETL/ELT) processes supporting enterprise data integration, migration, synchronization, and reporting activities.

  • Implement database backup, recovery, disaster recovery, replication, and high-availability solutions to ensure business continuity and operational resilience.

  • Coordinate with software developers, data architects, system administrators, cybersecurity personnel, and data analysts to integrate database solutions with enterprise applications and operational systems.

  • Develop and enforce database security controls, encryption, access management, auditing, and compliance measures consistent with organizational policies and Department of Defense cybersecurity requirements.

  • Support database modernization initiatives by migrating legacy databases, implementing cloud-based database technologies, and improving enterprise data management capabilities.

  • Develop technical documentation, database standards, data dictionaries, implementation plans, and operational procedures supporting lifecycle management and knowledge transfer.

  • Evaluate emerging database technologies, automation tools, cloud database services, and performance optimization techniques to improve enterprise capabilities.

  • Mentor junior database administrators and engineers while providing technical guidance on database design, administration, performance tuning, and operational best practices.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience designing, implementing, administering, and optimizing enterprise database systems supporting Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, federal government, or large commercial organizations.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Additional years of directly related experience may be substituted, where permitted.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting mission-critical production databases in high-availability environments.

  • Experience implementing database security, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, and performance optimization strategies.

Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of relational database management systems including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or equivalent enterprise database platforms.

  • Experience with NoSQL database technologies such as MongoDB, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, DynamoDB, Redis, or similar platforms.

  • Proficiency with SQL, stored procedures, query optimization, indexing strategies, database normalization, and database performance tuning.

  • Experience developing ETL/ELT processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Azure Data Factory, Informatica, Talend, or similar technologies.

  • Familiarity with cloud database platforms including Microsoft Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, Aurora, Google Cloud SQL, or other cloud-native database services.

  • Experience implementing database security, encryption, auditing, role-based access control, and compliance with DoD cybersecurity requirements.

  • Strong understanding of database replication, clustering, failover, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery architectures.

  • Proficiency with scripting and automation using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar scripting languages.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing technical documentation and executive-level briefings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), AWS Certified Database – Specialty, PostgreSQL Professional Certification, or equivalent database certification.

  • Experience supporting Geographic Combatant Commands, Joint Staff, Intelligence Community, or Department of Defense enterprise systems.

  • Experience supporting Operations in the Information Environment (OIE), command and control systems, intelligence systems, or operational planning environments.

  • Experience with enterprise data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks, Snowflake, Palantir Foundry, or Advana.

  • Experience implementing DevSecOps, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), database automation, or CI/CD pipelines supporting database deployments.

  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks and data governance principles.

Security Clearance:

  • Active TS/SCI required

Pay Range:

Pay Range $107,900.00 - $195,050.00
