System Excellence Division

System Excellence is responsible for the areas of teaching and leadership excellence and provincial assessment. This includes certification of all teachers, principals and superintendents in the province; developing and implementing professional practice standards; and conducting practice assurance in relation to the teaching profession. System Excellence division also develops, administers, marks and continually improves Alberta’s provincial assessments, including the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs), Diploma Exams (DIPS), and Literacy/Numeracy Assessments.

Role Responsibilities

Ensuring qualified educators are certified to teach in Alberta—locally and globally!

The Senior Credential Evaluator completes the assessment of Canadian and international teacher credentials to support Alberta teacher certification. This role works collaboratively with licensing bodies, post secondary institutions, and education stakeholders to ensure assessment standards are accurate, current, and consistently applied.

Key Responsibilities

• Consults with professional licensing bodies, post secondary institutions, and stakeholders to support best practices in credential recognition
• Monitors national and international education systems and assesses impacts on Alberta teacher certification standards
• Leads and supports the development and application of provincial credential assessment standards and principles
• Interprets and applies Labour Mobility Agreements for Canadian certificated teacher applicants
• Provides technical advice to committees, institutions, and individuals on teacher certification matters
• Interprets and explains certification policies and documentation requirements to applicants and stakeholders
• Maintains working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, policies, and certification practices in Alberta, Canada, and internationally
• Conducts complex research based assessments of Canadian and foreign academic and professional credentials
• Verifies authenticity of documentation through direct contact with institutions and education authorities
• Determines eligibility for teaching authority, bridging requirements, language proficiency, and total years of education
• Communicates assessment decisions clearly and professionally and monitors applicant progress toward meeting Alberta standards
• Processes applications under international agreements and prepares special authorizations to teach
• Supports consistency, quality assurance, and training of new Credential Evaluators
• Participates in system testing (e.g., TWINS Teacher Registry) to support operational improvements

This role requires strong research, analytical, and written communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of education partners.

Qualifications

Education

University degree in a related field supplemented by two years progressively responsible experience.

Other Requirements:

The position requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Minimum of two years full-time experience in evaluation of foreign educational credentials is desirable.
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work independently in a continuously changing environment and within a team
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, partners and clients
• A high degree of knowledge and confidence in using technology (i.e., TWINS, MS Suite, Adobe, ARTS)
• Ability to read French is desirable

There is one permanent full-time position working for 36.25 hours per week located in Edmonton.
