Job Summary

CSX is seeking an experienced Environmental Attorney to join its Law Department in Jacksonville, Florida. This role provides strategic legal counsel and manages environmental legal risks related to CSX's rail network, facilities, operations, and business activities.

Primary Responsibilities

· Provide practical legal advice and strategic counsel on federal and state environmental laws and regulations, including CERCLA, the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, RCRA, NEPA, and related state laws.

· Manage complex environmental litigation, regulatory investigations, administrative proceedings, and enforcement actions before federal and state courts and agencies.

· Advise on environmental issues arising from real estate, commercial, and corporate transactions, including environmental due diligence, risk allocation, indemnities, and other contractual protections.

· Direct and manage outside counsel while developing legal strategies for litigation, regulatory matters, and transactions.

· Draft, review, and negotiate settlement agreements, consent orders, access agreements, environmental indemnities, and other agreements involving environmental liabilities and obligations.

Minimum Qualifications

· Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

· Minimum of five years of legal experience with substantial responsibility for environmental law matters in a law firm, government agency, or corporate legal department.

· Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.

· Experience advising clients on environmental regulatory compliance, investigations, enforcement actions, and litigation matters.

Preferred Qualifications

· Seven to ten years of legal experience with substantial environmental law responsibilities, including experience independently managing complex matters and advising business leaders on environmental risk.

· Significant experience with CERCLA, Superfund matters, environmental remediation, cost recovery, natural resource damages, or allocation disputes.

· Experience managing environmental litigation, regulatory investigations, and enforcement matters.

· Experience interacting with federal and state regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state environmental authorities.

· Experience supporting transportation, industrial, infrastructure, manufacturing, or freight rail operations.

· Experience managing outside counsel and environmental consultants.

· Admission to practice law in Florida or eligibility to register as authorized in-house counsel in Florida.

· Strong analytical, legal research, drafting, communication, and negotiation skills.

· Ability to identify and proactively address legal issues, assess risk, and provide practical, business-focused solutions.

· Strong judgment and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.

· Ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously and prioritize competing demands.

· Ability to build effective relationships with business leaders, regulators, outside counsel, and other stakeholders.

· Strong advocacy, negotiation, and dispute resolution skills.

· Demonstrated ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-lawyer audiences.

· Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex legal matters, exercise sound judgment, and provide strategic counsel on issues involving significant legal, financial, operational, and reputational risk.

· Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously, support diverse internal clients, and meet competing deadlines.

· Ability to exercise sound judgment and effectively prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.

· Occasional travel may be required.

This role offers an annual salary range based on experience and qualifications. In addition to base salary we provide an annual bonus opportunity.
