Senior Counsel, Services, Security Solutions
Mastercard is seeking an experienced attorney to support Security Solutions, with a primary initial focus on the Fraud & Decisioning Solutions business unit in the Services Organization. This role will involve partnering closely with product and business teams to provide legal support and guidance on commercialization of emerging technologies, advancing Mastercard’s technology development and engagements, and supporting the growth of Mastercard’s programs. The candidate will be part of a highly agile team building and commercializing exciting products that are delivered at-scale to global markets. The position may evolve over time to support additional Security Solutions offerings and/or broader, region-based product legal coverage as business needs and priorities develop.
This full-time role is based in Brussels, Belgium and reports to the Senior Managing Counsel, Fraud and Decisioning Solutions.
Role and Responsibilities
As Senior Counsel, the successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor to help enable the execution of commercial objectives and business strategy. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, intellectually curious, analytical, and dedicated to delivering hands-on legal support. This role requires commercial acumen, the ability to analyze products, assess legal risks, and provide pragmatic guidance. The role will also involve partnering with subject matter experts such as regulatory, privacy and compliance counsel.
As part of the legal team, the candidate will play a major role in handling product development and support matters for the business on a day-to-day basis, identifying and analyzing relevant issues and helping the business effectively navigate legal risks and implement applicable controls, policies and processes. This role will:
• Provide legal oversight for various product teams in the Fraud and Decisioning Solutions business unit.
• Manage tactical and strategic legal support related to products and solutions to advance Mastercard’s corporate objectives and strategy.
• Collaborate with product, technology, sales, franchise, marketing, communications and other stakeholders to launch innovative solutions that differentiate Mastercard and meet our customers’ rapidly changing needs.
• Assist clients in navigating “grey areas” and mitigating legal and commercial risks by providing solution-oriented guidance.
• Provide strategic counsel during all stages of global product development from ideation to concept to launch and beyond.
• Ensure alignment and compliance of products with Mastercard’s policies, procedures and processes as well as applicable laws and regulations.
• Provide product legal support on a broad range of commercial and contractual matters, including marketing materials, licenses, pilot agreements, deployment agreements, and other technology agreements.
• Work in close collaboration with internal specialists including Franchise, Compliance, Regulatory, Privacy and Data Protection, and Intellectual Property counsel.
• Manage outside counsel where appropriate, ensuring compliance with internal policies and budget expectations, and delivering targeted training and guidance to product, sales, and delivery teams.

Qualifications
• Minimum six years of solid technology, commercial transactions, complex negotiations, and/or payments experience required.
• Qualified lawyer with a solid academic and training background, licensed to practice in the relevant jurisdiction in which the job is located.
• Able to analyze and identify core legal issues, skilled at explaining technical problems succinctly and clearly.
• Working knowledge of data privacy, regulatory, and intellectual property issues and how they relate to emerging technologies.
• A fast learner who can gain rapid familiarity with complex products, services and legal frameworks and maintain knowledge of those changing products, services and legal frameworks.
• Possess a positive “can-do” attitude, willing to take initiative and ready to go the extra mile.
• Solutions-oriented with excellent time management, planning and organizational skills.
• Able to work flexibly under pressure and with tight deadlines.
• Strong drafting, writing, oral communication and negotiating skills, able to effectively communicate vision and more detailed approaches to a wide variety of stakeholders.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in relationship building and partnering with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Global mindset and in-house experience, particularly in a multi-national company, is preferred.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to frame legal nuances and implications in practical terms.
• Must be flexible, adept at navigating ambiguity, and able to multi-task within tight timelines.
