Job Purpose:
The Senior Cotton Trader is responsible for originating, structuring, and executing physical cotton trades across international markets. This role requires deep market expertise, strong commercial instincts, and the ability to manage risk while building and maintaining long‑term supplier and customer relationships.
Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES
Trading & Commercial Execution
- Execute physical cotton trades (buy/sell) across designated origins and destinations.
- Negotiate contracts, pricing, quality specifications, delivery terms, and payment conditions.
- Manage a trading book with full P&L responsibility.
- Structure deals aligned with company risk appetite and market strategy.
Market Analysis & Strategy
- Monitor global cotton markets, including supply/demand fundamentals, crop conditions, logistics, and macroeconomic factors.
- Analyze futures markets, basis levels, and spreads to optimize trading decisions.
- Identify new trading opportunities, arbitrage structures, and market inefficiencies.
Risk Management
- Manage price, basis, credit, counterparty, and logistical risks.
- Use futures and options to hedge exposure when appropriate.
- Ensure adherence to internal risk limits, credit policies, and compliance requirements.
Relationship Management
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with growers, ginners, merchants, mills, agents, and brokers.
- Represent the company in negotiations, industry events, and market discussions.
- Expand the trading network in existing and new markets.
Operational Coordination
- Work closely with operations, logistics, finance, and quality teams to ensure smooth execution of contracts.
- Oversee post‑trade processes including shipment execution, documentation, quality claims, and dispute resolution.
Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor junior traders or commercial staff.
- Contribute to market intelligence sharing and best‑practice development within the trading desk.
Qualifications
To land this role you will need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Agriculture, or a related field.
- Typically 7–10+ years of experience in cotton trading or related agri‑commodities trading.
- Proven track record managing a profitable cotton trading book.
- Strong understanding of physical cotton contracts, INCOTERMS, futures hedging, and execution risk.
- Deep knowledge of key cotton origins and consumption markets

- Advanced negotiation and deal‑structuring skills.
- High level of numerical, analytical, and financial acumen.
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building abilities.
- Ability to perform in fast‑moving, high‑risk environments.
- Fluency in English; additional languages are an advantage.
- Willingness to travel as required.
