As a Senior Manager, HR Services, you will serve as a strategic HR partner to senior leaders across assigned Home Office functions, helping shape people strategies that drive organizational effectiveness, talent outcomes, engagement, and an exceptional associate experience. You will operate with a broad enterprise mindset, applying independent judgment in complex situations and modeling courageous leadership aligned with CarMax values. Team Overview

You will support HR Services leadership while partnering closely with Senior HR leaders, Centers of Excellence, and Home Office business leaders to deliver consistent, high quality HR support. This role helps translate HR strategy into seamless execution across performance management, associate relations, talent development, and engagement—ensuring alignment with CarMax’s culture, policies, and business needs.

Role Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on organizational design, talent strategy, performance management, and associate relations matters.
  • Lead complex associate relations and organizational challenges, offering sound judgment and an enterprise level perspective.
  • Translate business strategy into people strategies that strengthen engagement, capability, and operational results.
  • Analyze HR and workforce data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities; influence decision making through insight driven recommendations.
  • Partner with HR Centers of Excellence to design, enhance, and implement solutions across talent, compensation, learning, and associate relations.
  • Mentor and develop HR managers and team members, building bench strength and capability across the HR Services team.
  • Model courageous leadership, challenging appropriately, influencing change, and upholding consistent application of policies, processes, and CarMax values.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
  • 7+ years of HR or related experience, with strong analytical and project management capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and navigate complex, ambiguous situations.
  • Strong analytical judgment and communication skills across written, verbal, and interpersonal channels.
  • Experience mentoring and developing HR professionals.
  • Proficiency with Workday or similar HCM systems.
  • Proven ability to build strong partnerships, support organizational goals, and manage competing priorities effectively.

This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office (Richmond, VA) and associates will work onsite 4 days per week.

The annual salary for this position is:

$107,800.00 - $172,500.00

May be eligible for bonus and equity.

Benefits:

Except as otherwise required by state law, CarMax Associates are entitled to the following paid sick, vacation, and holiday time.

Associates that are considered full-time hourly or commission/incentive eligible:

  • To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company.
  • For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday. If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay.

Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
