Job Description

Balance is looking for an exceptional Senior Controller to join our Finance team and take a key leadership role as we continue to scale.

This is a hands-on, high-impact position for someone who combines strong accounting and financial expertise with sharp business judgment, analytical thinking, and excellent interpersonal skills. We are looking for someone who understands the numbers deeply but also sees the business behind them - someone who can challenge assumptions, identify issues early, communicate clearly, and partner effectively with teams across the company.

The Senior Controller will report to the VP Finance and Operations and manage the Assistant Controller and Accountant, with broad responsibility across accounting, reporting, tax, controls, and financial operations.

Responsibilities

• Own the company's accounting and financial reporting processes, including monthly, quarterly and annual close.
• Manage and develop the finance team, currently including an Assistant Controller and Accountant.
• Lead consolidated financial reporting across multiple entities and jurisdictions.
• Ensure accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with US GAAP and applicable accounting standards.
• Own key accounting areas including revenue recognition, intercompany transactions, reconciliations, accruals and balance-sheet management.
• Work closely with the VP Finance and Operations on financial analysis, management reporting, budgets, forecasts and strategic initiatives.
• Develop a deep understanding of Balance's business model, products and unit economics and translate financial data into meaningful business insights.
• Partner closely with Operations, Product, Sales, Legal and other teams on business and financial matters.
• Manage international tax matters and work closely with external tax advisors across the US and other jurisdictions.
• Lead annual audits and manage relationships with auditors, tax advisors and other external finance partners.
• Continuously improve financial processes, systems, automation and internal controls to support a rapidly scaling organization.
• Support complex transactions, new products, financing activities and other strategic projects as the company grows.

Requirements

• CPA with strong accounting fundamentals and 7+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience in a startup or high-growth technology company is highly preferred.
• Strong experience with consolidations, multi-entity accounting and international operations.
• Solid understanding of US GAAP, international tax and financial reporting.
• Experience managing and developing finance/accounting team members.
• Highly analytical and exceptionally sharp, with the ability to quickly understand complex business and financial issues.
• Strong business orientation - able to move beyond accounting and understand the commercial and operational implications behind the numbers.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to work effectively with senior management and cross-functional teams.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented while maintaining the ability to see the bigger picture.
• Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment, taking ownership and building processes where they don't yet exist.
• Proactive, hands-on and solution-oriented, with a strong sense of accountability.
