Job Description

What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?

At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

WSP is one of the world's leading engineering and environmental professional services firms providing technical consultancy to the built and natural environment. We believe that for societies to thrive, we must all hold ourselves accountable for tomorrow. For us, that means creating innovative solutions to the challenges the future will bring to the communities and environments where we live and work across the UK.

We are locally dedicated and propelled by international brainpower. We are technical experts and strategic advisors, including engineers, technicians, scientists, planners, surveyors, geo-science and environmental specialists, as well as other design, programme and construction management professionals. Our experts influence and design sustainable lasting solutions in the property & buildings, transportation & infrastructure, earth & environment, industry and power & energy sectors as well as project delivery and strategic consulting services.

ROLE

As Senior Consultant - Future Energy Networks, you will deliver and increasingly lead high-quality consulting projects and workstreams that help network operators, utilities and other energy-sector clients plan, transform and future-proof energy systems. Future Energy Networks is part of WSP's wider integrated Energy Advisory business, which brings together four core capabilities:

  • Markets Advisory – helping clients understand how energy markets operate, how market arrangements evolve, and how commercial value is created.
  • Policy & Regulation – supporting governments, regulators, system operators and utilities with policy development, economic regulation and regulatory reform.
  • Energy Decarbonisation – helping organisations, cities, utilities and governments secure, plan and optimise energy in an increasingly electrified economy.
  • Future Energy Networks – supporting network operators and utilities to plan, transform, deliver and future-proof the energy systems of the future.

Energy Advisory operates as a single integrated business, and all consultants are encouraged to contribute across multiple capabilities. This provides opportunities to broaden technical and consulting skills, work on multidisciplinary projects and develop a deeper understanding of the energy transition.

Working alongside engineers, economists, policy specialists, strategists and commercial advisors, you will deliver projects and increasingly lead defined workstreams across areas such as network planning, connections, flexibility, network transformation and innovation. You will engage directly with clients, apply sound analysis and judgement, and take ownership of clear, practical and high-quality outputs.

You will contribute to the development of Future Energy Networks and the wider Energy Advisory business through knowledge sharing, business development and the improvement of our services and ways of working. We are looking for relevant experience in one or more areas, strong consulting or delivery skills, and the curiosity and potential to develop across the wider Future Energy Networks agenda.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivering consulting projects and defined workstreams, with increasing responsibility for planning, coordination and successful outcomes.
  • Taking ownership of high-quality project outputs, including technical accuracy, clear communication, timely delivery and effective use of project resources.
  • Applying relevant experience to challenges in network planning, connections, flexibility, network transformation, innovation and related areas of the energy transition.
  • Developing proportionate analytical approaches, work plans and recommendations in response to client requirements.
  • Engaging directly with client stakeholders, presenting findings clearly and building trusted working relationships.
  • Working effectively in multidisciplinary teams and, where appropriate, coordinating colleagues and supporting their development.
  • Delivering technical, commercial, economic, policy and strategic analysis to support client decision-making.
  • Contributing to business cases, regulatory submissions, market assessments, network or energy strategies and implementation plans.
  • Identifying practical improvements to tools, methods and approaches that strengthen project delivery and WSP's advisory capability.
  • Contributing to proposals, bids, client development and other business development activities.
  • Supporting the development of Future Energy Networks services, market offerings and team capability.
  • Sharing knowledge and, where relevant, contributing to publications, events and wider industry engagement.

KEY COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE

  • Relevant experience gained in consulting, electricity networks, utilities or the wider energy sector.
  • Experience contributing to the delivery of consulting, advisory, technical or strategic projects, with evidence of increasing responsibility for projects or workstreams.
  • Knowledge or experience in one or more areas such as network planning, connections, flexibility, network transformation, innovation, resilience or energy-system planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in complex or evolving environments, using sound judgement and seeking support where appropriate.
  • Experience engaging directly with clients or other stakeholders and translating their needs into clear, practical outputs.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex topics clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, both in writing and verbally.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
  • Good commercial awareness, including an understanding of project delivery, client value and the role of business development.
  • Experience supporting, mentoring or sharing knowledge with colleagues, or a willingness to develop these skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and contribute constructively to team and capability development.
  • A willingness and ability to contribute across the wider Energy Advisory business beyond your primary area of experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree or equivalent relevant experience in an engineering, scientific, technical, economic, policy or related discipline.
  • Chartered status, or progress towards professional accreditation with a relevant body, is desirable but not essential.
