Job Description

BKOM Studios is looking for an experienced, passionate and rigorous Combat Game Designer to define the "punch" and adrenaline of our future action titles. As an expert, you don't just create attacks, you sculpt a "Hell Yeah!" experience — one where the player feels powerful, every command responds instantly, and the synergy between heroes and equipment creates memorable moments on PC and consoles.
Permanent, Full-time. The role lies at the intersection of the feeling of playing (game feel), technical balancing and artificial intelligence. We are looking for a professional capable of sculpting melee and ranged combat mechanics, while ensuring perfect synergy between animations, controls and enemy behaviors.

Your daily life

As a Combat Designer, you are responsible for the game’s intensity. Your daily work is a direct embodiment of our core values:

Humility and courage

  • Design, iterate and lead the vision of bold combat systems, while having the courage to discard prototypes that don't "click" in order to achieve excellence.

  • Present your mechanics to technical and artistic teams with conviction, while welcoming feedback from playtests with humility to refine the player experience.

  • Propose innovative enemy behaviors that defy current standards, even when faced with production constraints.

Make it your own

  • Ensure that each hero's movement, abilities, and role provide immediate satisfaction through deep team synergy.

  • Design and balance power progression (equipment, potions, runes, passive perks) to offer varied strategic opportunities throughout the game.

  • Take full ownership of the combat loop, from the initial intention to the final balancing of data (frames, damage, ranges).

  • Establish and maintain with complete autonomy the technical and systemic documentation of the project, ensuring that the vision of the fight is understood by all departments.

  • Analyze and dissect trends in the "Action/Combat" genre to anticipate player expectations and propose creative, viable solutions.

Level up, together

  • Collaborate closely with animators, programmers, and level designers to ensure seamless integration and consistency of elements.

  • Guide the creation of enemy AI to provide varied, rhythmic, and memorable encounters.

  • Share your knowledge of integration tools (Unreal) to elevate the standard of fluidity and responsiveness within the studio.

Forged by the game, driven by passion

  • Infuse your deep understanding of the "3Cs" (Character, Camera, Controls) into every interaction.

  • Relentlessly testing the game with contagious passion, always searching for that little detail that will make every hit satisfying.

Profil

  • Work location: Quebec (Hybrid Mode) or remote.

  • Experience: A minimum of 5 to 8 years in video game design, with a proven specialization in the creation and balancing of complex combat systems.

  • Proficient in Unreal Engine. You possess a proven ability to quickly prototype mechanics and navigate combat data structures with ease.

  • A thought leader capable of transforming raw ideas into innovative combat systems that define a game's identity. You maintain a constant awareness of global industry trends.

  • A skilled communicator, you know how to negotiate and align visions between production, artistic and technical teams to ensure the viability of concepts.

  • Fully fluent in English with a natural ability to unite teams around a creative vision and to make design concepts captivating.

  • Complex problem-solving, sharp analytical mind, and the ability to lead productive brainstorming sessions.

  • Capable of leading the vision for not just the combat gameplay, but also working with animators, sound designers, and VFX artists to deliver a thrilling end-to-end combat experience.

Assets

  • Experience in formal mentorship or leading a small design team.

  • Active participation in industry conferences (GDC, Summits, etc.) and established professional network.

  • Strong scripting skills (C#, Blueprints) or advanced prototyping tools.

  • Experience with multiplayer titles or large-scale action games.
