Job Description

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is currently seeking a part-time Senior Center Program Director at the Aurora Hills Community Center to manage the center's operations, including the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs for seniors aged 55 and older. This Program Director will ensure that all programming is of the highest quality and meets the needs of the community, contributing to a dynamic and enriching environment for participants.

Specific duties include:

  • Creating an environment that fosters senior empowerment, exploration of new roles for 55+ program participants, cultivating leadership and volunteerism among seniors and stakeholders, including connecting the work of the advisory committee to the Senior Adult Council and program participants;
  • Supervising senior adult activities and volunteers;
  • Assessing needs of potential and actual participants, including identifying and cultivating new participant leadership and empowerment through advisory councils;
  • Managing budget and tracking expenditures, resources, and inventories of supplies/equipment, including ordering equipment and reporting equipment repairs;
  • Engaging in Civic Engagement, facilitating an open exchange of opinions from diverse groups, participating in training and developmental opportunities, and practicing established Arlington Civic Engagement Guidelines;
  • Providing advocacy, education, resource referral, and consultation with staff and customers; including providing information for services requested;
  • Developing and distributing publicity materials for programs including 55+ Guide, Center newsletter, calendars, flyers, etc.;
  • Performing administrative duties to ensure compliance with County policies and procedures, including maintaining accuracy of participants, resources, administrative records, and service agreements; and
  • Ensuring set-up of rooms and performing other job-related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills and ability to follow the County and 55+ Center professional standards;
  • Ability to deliver high-quality customer service while responding thoughtfully and sensitively to each customer’s unique needs;
  • Effective administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills along with technology proficiency; and
  • Proven ability to build strong, nurturing relationships by leveraging individual strengths and fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed and encouraged.

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Gerontology, Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation, Adult Education or a closely related Human Services field; and
  • Some experience managing recreation programs and activities in a senior adult or recreation setting.

Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience. Additional experience may be substituted for education.

Desirables: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Recreation program assessment, design, planning, implementation, and evaluation;
  • Intermediate level computer skills, Microsoft office, and office equipment;
  • Working with diverse communities;
  • Overseeing special events and/or
  • Bilingual skills (fluency in English/Spanish).

  • This position will require incumbent to work at locations other than the primary worksite and must have the ability to use alternative transportation methods or possess a valid driver's license. If possess a license, will be required to show proof by providing a copy of driving record.

  • Must possess or obtain First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications within 60 days of hire.

Additional Information

Work Hours:

  • This is a part-time position, required to work 24 hours a week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm and Tuesday 9:30am-12:30pm.

  • Occasional weeknight or weekend hours will be required to work County-wide or Senior Center special events.

  • Hours are subject to change based on program needs.
