Job Description

Our goal is to bring the widest benefits to society through enabling the analysis of anything, by anyone, anywhere. The company has developed a new generation of nanopore-based sensing technology for faster, information rich, accessible and affordable molecular analysis.

The first application is DNA/RNA sequencing, and the technology is in development for the analysis of other types of molecules including proteins. The technology is used to understand and characterise the biology of humans and diseases such as cancer, plants, animals, bacteria, viruses, and whole environments.

With a thriving culture of ambition and strong innovation goals, Oxford Nanopore is a UK headquartered company with global operations and customers in more than 125 countries.

Our Applications Tool Development team is looking for a Senior Software Developer to help build high-quality software for genomic analyses using Oxford Nanopore sequencing data.

Our team develops computational methods and bioinformatics tools that make use of the unique characteristics of nanopore sequencing and its continuing improvements. We work on challenging genomic applications where correctness, reproducibility, maintainability, and performance matter.

The Details...

This role is intended for candidates with senior-level software engineering experience. You should have strong technical judgment and curiosity about computational genomics. Experience developing clinical, regulated, or high-reliability scientific software would be a strong plus.

This role is a particularly good fit for someone who enjoys turning promising algorithms and prototypes into high-quality scientific software. Alongside hands-on development, you will work together with other developers, applications scientists, and product stakeholders to improve how we design, test, benchmark, document, and release genomic analysis tools.

What you'll do:

  • Develop computational methods for the analysis of ONT (primarily genomic) sequencing data.
  • Design, implement, test, and maintain high-quality software.
  • Help converting research prototypes and experimental workflows into robust, reusable, and maintainable software.
  • Collaborate with other teams to understand and help define requirements and gather feedback.
  • Improve engineering practices across the team, including code review, automated testing, technical risk assessment, packaging, documentation, and release hygiene.
  • Plan and execute appropriate benchmarking experiments.
  • Prepare technical documentation and help integrate developed software into analysis workflows.
  • Mentor colleagues and help raise software engineering standards.

What We're Looking For...

  • Strong programming ability in Python and at least one systems programming language, preferably Rust or C++.
  • Firm knowledge of standard algorithms and data structures
  • Broad software engineering experience, including software design, implementation, testing and maintenance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make progress in presence of ambiguity.
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Curiosity, learning drive, and interest in computational genomics.

It would be great if you also have:

  • Experience developing and maintaining clinical, regulated, or other high-reliability scientific software.
  • Experience with analysis of long-read sequencing data.
  • Experience in computational genomics (e.g. genome assembly, variant calling, structural variant analysis, methylation analysis, cancer genomics, or related areas).
  • Experience using standard genomics tools and file formats.
  • Experience designing benchmarks and regression-testing frameworks.
  • Experience with workflow systems, containers, cloud or HPC environments.
  • Experience of incorporating AI-assisted code generation and review into production software workflows.

If you are looking to utilise your skills to really make a difference to humankind, then consider joining our team and apply today!

About Oxford Nanopore Technologies

Our goal is to enable the analysis of anything, anywhere, by anyone.

We have developed the world’s first and only nanopore DNA and RNA sequencing platform. It’s a new generation of sequencing technology — the only one to offer: scalability to portable or ultra-high throughput formats, real-time data delivery, and the ability to elucidate rich biological data.

We are aiming to disrupt the way that biological analyses are currently performed, and open up new applications that have a profound, positive impact on society.

Our devices offer real-time analysis, for rapid insights, in fully scalable formats — from pocket to population scale — and the technology is being used in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Founded in 2005 as a spin-out from the University of Oxford, the company now employs more than 600 people from multiple disciplines including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercialisation. The management team, led by CEO Dr Gordon Sanghera, has a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market.
