The Senior Batch Operator is responsible for monitoring and managing mission-critical batch processing across mainframe and distributed systems. The role ensures that scheduled jobs run successfully, systems remain stable, and any incidents are promptly investigated and escalated. The position requires sound knowledge of Windows Server environments and troubleshooting skills, as well as knowledge of mainframe operations including ISA (IBM System Automation), MVS, SDSF/ISPF, and TSO. Operators must be able to troubleshoot abends, support business-critical workloads, and maintain high system availability.
Key Responsibilities:
Batch Operations & Monitoring
• Monitor and maintain health of batch cycles, mainframe systems, and associated workflows.
• Perform 1st and 2nd level troubleshooting of abends and escalate complex issues following standard procedures.
• Use MVS, SDSF/ISPF, and TSO to investigate job failures, analyse logs, and restart/recover jobs as needed.
• Ensure availability, stability, and performance of batch jobs and related applications.
• Oversee automated system operations with ISA (IBM System Automation), respond to automation-driven events, and use NetView to start/stop STCs (background system processes) and carry out IPLs (system restarts to initialize the mainframe operating environment).
Incident & Problem Management
• Respond promptly to alerts, incidents, and system notifications based on priority.
• Document, track, and resolve incidents using ticketing and incident management tools.
• Collaborate with technical teams to resolve issues quickly and minimise business disruption.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
• Work closely with other operations squads to ensure seamless cross-system workflow execution.
• Assist in identifying training needs and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.
• Proactively suggest improvements to batch processes and automation.
Service Continuity
• Support 24x7 operations through rotating shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, SLAs, and audit requirements.
Required Knowledge & Skills
• Experience in batch operations, system administration, or mainframe support.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work under pressure and make quick decisions.
• Hands-on experience with mainframes and batch operations:
• SDSF/ISPF navigation and utilities o MVS/zOS environment o Checking job outputs and logs o TSO commands and job submission
• Conversant with ticketing tools such as Cherwell, ServiceNow, or similar, for managing incidents and service requests, and capable of assessing and prioritising them effectively.
• Excellent communication skills to interact with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have knowledge and skills:
• Windows administration with exposure to SCOM, mRemote, or PSM Connection Manager
• Knowledge of Windows Server, MSSQL, and distributed batch operations.
• Familiarity with FTP/SFTP protocols, encryption, and data transfer processes.
• Exposure to VMware vCenter or other server management platforms.
• Basic understanding of COBOL, JCL, and database environments (DB2, IDMS).
• JES2 job entry and spool management
• Experience with Control-M, TWS (Tivoli Workload Scheduler) or IBM Workload Automation
• Knowledge of ISA (IBM System Automation) and NetView
